Don't want people noseying on Companies House where you live? 😅

A virtual office allows you to present a professional image without people being able to see where you live - which aside from obvious privacy implications, could pose a safety risk too.

Let’s talk about Ai artwork… 👇

I get it. You can’t afford to pay a designer. You know you don’t have great design skills and this at least looks sort of professional.

But like Ai written content, people can see it for what it is from a mile off.

My opinion? If you’re running the local school fundraiser or a small local event, charity, local butty shop, one off small event etc crack on. Im not convinced the average, non-marketing trained person will particularly care that the info was communicated using Ai. They just want to know what, where, when and this does the job quickly and cheaply.

We have to be careful to balance the criticism of ai fodder here with the commercial realities of running a micro business.

But, if you’re trying to grow a brand with long term sustainability and brand traction… I would probably avoid creating content that looks like it came off the Chat GPT production line 🙈

A better option might be to use Canva (or similar) templates where you can at least alter the branding, fonts, images etc to create something aligned with your brand, with minimal design skills.

What do you think? Are you seeing a sudden glut of near identical Ai generated social media images…?

Happy Easter from all of us at The Small Business Academy 🐣👩🏼‍💻

The last few weeks our in-person sessions have been brilliant! Not just learning… actually doing!

The learners have been getting stuck in, testing things, and implementing their learnings - with a bit of friendly competition thrown in!

Here’s Claire from Lily & The Lighthouse, who filmed multiple video clips, edited, created and published an incredible Reel during Amy’s Organic Social Media training… (and won a cheeky Easter egg prize for her efforts 🍫)

Huge well done to everyone who’s been part of the sessions recently! Enjoy the Easter break (and all the chocolate) - and we’ll see you soon 💫

Yesterday at The Small Business Academy, we hosted a Systems & Scaling workshop delivered by Nikki Hesford, bringing together a diverse range of businesses from across multiple sectors including patisserie, motor trade, plumbing, construction, radio, marketing and finance.

Despite operating in very different industries, a common theme emerged; many growing businesses remain heavily reliant on the founder or managing director.

The session focused on practical strategies to support sustainable growth through structure, clarity and effective systems.

Key areas covered included…

• strengthening standard operating procedures
• implementing scalable systems and processes
• improving consistency across teams
• reducing reliance on the founder
• enabling teams to take ownership

Workshops like this are designed to provide actionable insight that businesses can apply immediately to support long-term growth.

If you are interested in attending future marketing and business workshops, please visit our website or drop us a message…

There's an uncomfortable truth that business owners don't want to hear.... but they need to....

You don't need to go to more events.
You don't need to learn more marketing techniques.
You don't need to work more on your brand.

You need to build the boring, unsexy, solid foundations of a profitable business.

Too many people want to decorate the cake, but they don't want to mix the flour and the butter, and weigh the ingredients and bake the cake. Because that isn't 'fun'

They want to attend the opening of an envelope, take selfies at yet another networking event - but they don't want to sit and forecast their sales and margin for the next 12 months and build a system for how they're going to achieve it.

They are 'too busy' to work on their business, but they are running around fire fighting, flying by the seat of their pants, reacting to whatever drama rears it's head on any given Monday.

They keep learning, but don't implement anything..... Because 'learning' is working, right...? 🫤

This workshop is the one nearly every business we support really needs - and yet only 4 people have booked onto it.

Because it means actually doing some work. Learning how to actually run a business instead of pratting about being a busy fool...

Who else is in?

(Nikki would never write this about herself… so we’re doing it for her...)

Today is International Women’s Day, and it feels like the perfect moment to shine a light on the woman behind The Small Business Academy - Nikki Hesford.

Nikki didn’t create The Small Business Academy because it would be easy - She started it because she could see something missing!

Across Lancashire there were thousands of incredible small businesses - passionate people with big ideas - but the support around them was fragmented, confusing, or simply inaccessible. Many founders were trying to grow their businesses on their own, without the training, guidance, or community they actually needed.

So Nikki did something about it.

With determination (and a TONNE of stubborn resilience), she built The Small Business Academy to bridge that gap. A place where business owners could access practical training, real support, and genuine opportunities to grow.

Since then, the Academy has supported hundreds of businesses through workshops, mentoring, conferences, and fully funded programmes backed by local councils. Businesses that now have stronger strategies, more confidence, clearer direction, and bigger ambitions.

But perhaps the most powerful thing Nikki has created isn’t just training… It’s belief.

Belief for founders who didn’t realise support like this existed. Belief for people who weren’t sure if they belonged in business spaces. Belief that businesses in Lancashire can grow, innovate and thrive when the right support is there.

On International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating Nikki and every woman who has stepped forward, taken a risk, and built something that didn’t exist before.

And to organisations, partners, and leaders reading this…. If we want stronger economies and thriving communities, we must continue investing in women, backing female founders, and creating environments where opportunity is equal.

Because when women grow businesses, entire regions grow with them. Happy International Women’s Day! 💜

If this one felt a bit close to home… it’s because it usually is.

So many brilliant business owners are exhausted. Diary full. Inbox full. To-do list never ending. And yet when you really look at it, nothing strategic has moved. Revenue hasn’t shifted in the way you hoped. The big ideas are still sat in your notes app. The uncomfortable conversations are still waiting.

Being busy gives you a hit. It makes you feel needed. It makes you feel productive. But it doesn’t automatically build a better business.

Growth tends to come from the things we avoid. Reviewing your numbers properly. Tightening your offer. Having clearer sales conversations. Putting structure in place instead of firefighting all day.

You don’t need another productivity hack. You need a clearer framework and someone to help you focus on the right things in the right order.

That’s exactly what we do inside The Small Business Academy. Training. Structure. Growth. Practical workshops designed to help you stop spinning and start scaling.

If you’re ready to stop confusing busy with progress, head to thesmallbusinessacademy.co.uk and have a look at what’s coming up…
