It’s easy to assume that all interns do are menial tasks, making tea and coffee, photocopying and answering the phone. However, this is absolutely not the case! The role of an intern could not be more varied – especially in the marketing industry. These myths need busting, so keep reading to find out what really can happen on an internship- and what won’t!
☕ All you do is make tea and coffee.
While tea and coffee are popular around the office, don’t expect to find an intern bound to the kettle. An internship is a really fulfilling experience with an emphasis on learning, often meaning your day will be packed full of new experiences. In the marketing industry, this could be a tutorial on Photoshop, an introduction to PR scheduling software, or even a delve into media analytics!
🖨️ You spend most of your time at the printer.
Firstly, in a world becoming more and more digitised, you should rarely need a printer! Notwithstanding this, it’s likely you won’t go anywhere near a printer on your internship. Think instead spending valuable time with other people at the office. At WSA, this could be an insightful chat with a PR manager about the press release process, or even writing a blog post of your own.
🖥️ You never leave your desk.
An internship is all about exposing yourself to as many new experiences as possible. This means you could find yourself in a conference room meeting with a client, sat with another team member learning about what they do, or even at an exhibition!
📝 You must have related work experience to do an internship.
An internship is often the starting point of your career journey, so lots of experience is not expected! As long as you are clearly passionate and excited about the work, someone will invest in you.
🧠 You won’t learn much on an internship.
Whether you are interning for three months, three weeks, or even three days, your internship is what you make it. Ask as many questions as physically possible, take advantage of any opportunities, and speak to as many people as you can. By the end of it you will have learnt much more than you thought you could.
