After finishing school, whether that’s university, college, or even secondary, it can be really difficult to know what to do next. You find yourself out of education very suddenly, with the pressure to have your next steps planned already. This can be a very daunting prospect, but there are many ways you can begin to plan your early careers journey.

After considering the following suggestions, you could find yourself working in an industry you would never have thought of. Take this from our intern, a geography graduate who has now begun her career in marketing and communications!

Think about the aspects of your studies that you enjoyed. 📚

While the content of your degree or other studies may be the first thing that comes to mind when planning your next steps, it is also helpful to think about what methods of study you enjoyed. Did you find yourself getting creative with presentations? Did you enjoy researching and analysing data sets? These things are not subject specific!

Consider your extracurriculars. 🏅

Think about any clubs or societies you got involved with. These may be to do with your subject, but possibly not! Often if you are doing them as extracurricular it means it’s certainly something you enjoy, so if you liked your role as social media coordinator of the running club, you might enjoy a career as a digital marketer!

Don’t feel restricted to your degree. 💡

Don’t be concerned if you begin to think you might be interested in a career in PR but didn’t study a relevant degree. You will have more relevant transferrable skills than you think, such as communication, presentation, and organisational skills. When looking to gain relevant experience, reach out to local businesses. Opportunities often snowball so make sure to take advantage of as many chances as you can.

Speak to someone! 🗨️

Whether it’s a careers advisor, a family member, or a friend, speaking with someone who knows you well can really give you the boost to go for it. They can put things into perspective, help you brainstorm career ideas, or even help you write and send an email seeking an opportunity.

It’s easy to assume that all interns do are menial tasks, making tea and coffee, photocopying and answering the phone. However, this is absolutely not the case! The role of an intern could not be more varied – especially in the marketing industry. These myths need busting, so keep reading to find out what really can happen on an internship- and what won’t!

☕ All you do is make tea and coffee.

While tea and coffee are popular around the office, don’t expect to find an intern bound to the kettle. An internship is a really fulfilling experience with an emphasis on learning, often meaning your day will be packed full of new experiences. In the marketing industry, this could be a tutorial on Photoshop, an introduction to PR scheduling software, or even a delve into media analytics!

🖨️ You spend most of your time at the printer.

Firstly, in a world becoming more and more digitised, you should rarely need a printer! Notwithstanding this, it’s likely you won’t go anywhere near a printer on your internship. Think instead spending valuable time with other people at the office. At WSA, this could be an insightful chat with a PR manager about the press release process, or even writing a blog post of your own.

🖥️ You never leave your desk.

An internship is all about exposing yourself to as many new experiences as possible. This means you could find yourself in a conference room meeting with a client, sat with another team member learning about what they do, or even at an exhibition!

📝 You must have related work experience to do an internship.

An internship is often the starting point of your career journey, so lots of experience is not expected! As long as you are clearly passionate and excited about the work, someone will invest in you.

🧠 You won’t learn much on an internship.

Whether you are interning for three months, three weeks, or even three days, your internship is what you make it. Ask as many questions as physically possible, take advantage of any opportunities, and speak to as many people as you can. By the end of it you will have learnt much more than you thought you could.

Starting out in the marketing and PR industry? Looking for tips on how to write a stand-out cover letter as well as a press release? Look no further!

Our marketing and communications intern Lucy has written her fair share of cover letters, and now after working at WSA for three weeks, she has now also seen a fair share of press releases. In fact, they are not so different when considering the fundamentals of writing good content. So, here are her Top 5 tips to anyone applying to a role in PR, both to help get the role, and then to excel at it…

1. What’s new? Think about what will make this piece of writing stand out? What has changed, or for a cover letter, what puts you above the rest?

2. Be on the lookout for extra content. When writing a press release, you always need to be thinking about what you can tease out of a story. Similarly, an employer will be looking to find out as much about you as possible- when writing keep in mind what you can pull further from your content.

3. Write to your target audience. A key focus in marketing is to know your audience. This will not only help guide you with what to include, but it can also perfect your structure, language, and tone. Think about what they will want to read about.

4. Create a strong opening. Just as you will want to catch the eye of a reader in a press release, the same goes for cover letters. Try to avoid typical openings and instead get creative- this will make your piece immediately memorable.

5. Be careful with AI! While AI has many benefits, you should be cautious when using it to write large pieces of content for you. Not only can your audience tell, but it will come across as less genuine. After all, your audience want to hear from you, not ChatGPT.

But the only tricks WSA play are the ones up our sleeves when it comes to terrifyingly good campaigns.

In a job as broad and varied as a marketing role, it’s difficult to condense all the possible pieces of advice we could give into just five key tips! To help with this, our recent intern Lucy has pulled together the main takeaways from her internship at WSA to advise and encourage other budding marketeers in their early careers.

1. Relations are everything! Maintaining a positive relationship with colleagues and clients is crucial to being a successful marketeer- and makes for an enjoyable workplace.

2. Play to your strengths! Everyone will have a different approach to a task in such a creative industry, so don’t feel pressured to switch up your methods if they work for you. That being said, stay open to new ideas (which takes us to the next point!)

3. Keep learning! Remain open and eager to learn new things. You can learn so much from other people and the world is constantly changing. Listen to your colleagues, clients, or even a podcast and your campaign ideas will remain fresh and exciting.

4. Keep asking! By this we mean not only asking questions, but also asking for opportunities. You never know what you could end up doing.

5. Get creative! It sounds obvious but thinking outside of the box is a huge asset. Don’t fall into doing the same thing- take advantage of all the different ways of advertising. From using different channels, to different formats, to different seasonal themes, there are countless ways to freshen up a campaign.
