Just recently I've seen several posts on Facebook and other social media platforms with people offering 'free' websites if you pay for the domain registration and hosting of the site on a monthly basis. They often cite that this is to allow them to build up their portfolio as they are just starting out. As you'd expect, these posts get lots of attention from businesses wanting a website and thinking they are getting a great deal.

🚩🚩🚩 I'm not suggesting that all these posts are scams (although some will be!). However it's important to acknowledge that you are venturing into the unknown as many of these posts will be from people/businesses with little or no experience. And because they are building the websites on mass for a small amount, they're unlikely to take the time to discuss your business and produce a website that works for you. It'll be a very basic site with limited customer service (and most probably limited visibility on search engines).

You will also never really own the website as you aren't paying for it (you're only covering the hosting), so it's unlikely you'll be able to move it elsewhere. This means you are at the mercy of increasing hosting costs and additional costs if you want to make any changes or have it properly maintained.
