Financial Services Company | London

At around 220,000 square feet, across nine floors and glazed almost throughout, the challenge at One Paddington Square was the sheer size of the project and the amount of signage materials to be printed and installed. Hundreds of individual glass screens to feature manifestation.

That was the scale of the new London headquarters we delivered signage and wayfinding for, a c.£0.5m scheme for a leading financial services company in Paddington, working through main contractor Overbury on an interior designed by tp bennett.

The signature idea turns the building's own structure into the wayfinding. Floor numbers are wrapped around the structural columns as curved, back-illuminated numerals in opal acrylic, glowing a soft warm white, with the cabling concealed inside the column shroud. A plain column becomes a floor marker you cannot miss. The same illuminated craft runs into the refreshment points, where rimless built-up letters are set into the joinery so the wording reads as part of the furniture.

The inclusive layer goes further than most schemes attempt: all-gender washrooms in blasted satin stainless steel, hearing-loop signage, sliding occupancy indicators for the medical and contemplation rooms, and a discreet direction-of-prayer indicator, all held within one visual family. Privacy manifestation to the glazing uses a softly printed rippled-water pattern drawn from the building's waterside setting, so it meets building control and adds to the design story rather than interrupting it.

8 Bishopsgate | London

One bronze finish. Ten different substrates. Four floors of a 50-storey City tower, and then matched again two years later on a fifth, so closely that you cannot tell the new floor from the original. That was the discipline behind the interior signage scheme at 8 Bishopsgate, WilkinsonEyre's stacked tower that steps back to protect the view of St Paul's. We were appointed to deliver the complete scheme across a leading international law firm's London base, around 60,000 square feet high in the building.

Holding one anodic bronze across every element is a challenge. The same colour had to read identically on 10mm router-cut aluminium, on 1mm discs the size of a coin, and on 30mm acrylic sprayed to look like solid metal, against oak, stone, glass and plaster in turn. In an occupied tower, with everything arriving through a booked goods lift more than twenty floors up and almost nothing allowed to be drilled, the setting out had to be right first time.

Changeability was a key design theme, so we specified Folio™ across the entire scheme: a bronze-matched face with a 3D-printed door number, braille printed in clear, and a side-loading acetate insert so the firm's own team can change occupant names by hand in seconds, without tools and without remaking a sign.

In a building where spectacular views across the city dominate, the role of the signage is a high class addition that wayfinds key locations.

CASE STUDY - > 19 Cornwall Street, Birmingham.
Kier Property took a 1991 Birmingham office back to its frame and rebuilt it as 139,000 sq ft of Grade A workspace. All-electric, net zero carbon in operation, and one of the most sustainable buildings in the city. It was being let while it was being finished. So nothing we made could be bonded to a wall.

The wayfinding family runs to 17 panels, ground to the fifth-floor roof terrace. Frosted acrylic, with the lettering cut clean through to an oak veneer panel behind, fixed on our patented Jigsaw™ system: a concealed rail carrying lockable, interchangeable panels. A swap takes minutes and leaves no mark.

In reception, the tenant directory is machined aluminium flat bar set into a curved fluted timber wall, with freestanding letters that lift straight out of each shelf. A tenant change is a set of letters, not a new sign.

xsign partnered with creative agency f.r.a. on the signage project at The Kimmeridge in Oxford. f.r.a. led on the creative design process and we manufactured the signage as per the specification. The Kimmeridge is a purpose built residential apartment block West of Oxford city centre, providing modern accommodation in a thriving local community.

The external signage above the reception entrance includes reverse built-up logo and letters with 30mm thick acrylic inserts with face illumination, mounted to a bespoke metal framework with mechanical fixings to the concrete soffit. We also feature an external projecting sign with internal illumination, and a range of 2mm thick aluminium wayfinding and directional signage.

The internal signage includes bespoke aluminium mitred-angle frame signage with black Foamalux bonded panels and architectural vinyl applied to the face to create a stunning visual. Additionally, we have supplied a range of 2mm thick aluminium discs and wayfinding directional signage.

This is UNTIL, Canary Wharf.

UNTIL brings more than 40 health and wellness specialisms together under one roof, from physiotherapy and osteopathy to dentistry, nutrition and medical aesthetics. When a brand like that opens in a landmark building in a landmark location, the signage has to explain everything on offer before anyone steps inside.

We were appointed by UNTIL to deliver the full brand signage, window graphics and glass manifestation at YY London, the striking net zero building set over the dock. The scheme runs from a two-metre cut-vinyl logotype that reads clear across the water, to a window graphic listing every specialist in one clean column, to glazing manifestation matched to UNTIL's palette, so a safety requirement becomes part of the brand rather than an afterthought.

xsign designed, manufactured and installed the internal and external signage at the Victoria Philip Dahdaleh Heart and Lung Research Institute at the University of Cambridge Biomedical Campus. This scheme is in addition to a number of signage projects we have delivered at the campus, including Royal Papworth Hospital.

The VPD-HRLI brings together heart and lung researchers from across academia to help discover breakthroughs in treatment and prevention. We were tasked to design a high quality signage and wayfinding scheme.

The external crest and lettering is manufactured from 3mm thick aluminium, with a powder coating and a gloss applied.

The internal signage scheme makes use of hollow aluminium numerals, directory panels, projecting aluminium pictograms, 5mm thick black acrylic panels throughout.
