"How long will my website take?" ๐Ÿ•

Honest answer: for a typical small business site, 4โ€“8 weeks from kick-off to launch, if your content's ready to go.

The real bottleneck usually isn't the build; it's waiting on text and photos. I've broken down each stage so you know what to expect.

Struggling to show up when people search "[your service] near me"? ๐Ÿ“

It usually comes down to a handful of fixable things: your business details matching everywhere online, an active Google Business listing, and asking happy customers for reviews.

I've put together the full local SEO basics for small businesses.

Ever heard the word "sitemap" and nodded along without really knowing what it means? ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

It's a file that tells Google exactly which pages exist on your website, so it can find and index them faster.

Good news: most WordPress sites create one automatically. Here's how to check yours actually exists.

Quick website check for you. ๐Ÿ‘€

Look at your address bar right now. Does it say "Not Secure"?

If it does, visitors are seeing that warning too, and a lot of them will click away before they even read your homepage. An SSL certificate fixes it, and most hosting packages now include one for free.

I've written up exactly what it does and why it matters (not just for online shops!).

Something worth knowing if you run a healthcare, legal, or public-facing business: website accessibility isn't optional anymore.

Under the Equality Act, many organisations have a legal duty to make sure their site works for people using screen readers, keyboard navigation, or other assistive tech.

Beyond the legal side, an accessible site is usually just a better-built site, full stop, with a clearer structure and better usability for everyone. If you've never had your site checked for this, it's worth doing.

Small change, big impact: swap your stock photos for real ones. A generic photo of a smiling person in a call centre headset tells a visitor nothing about your actual business.

A real photo of your shop, your team, or your finished work builds trust in a second. You don't need a professional photographer for this; a decent phone camera and good lighting will do.

Here's something most business owners have never heard of but that genuinely affects whether you get found: schema markup.

It's a bit of hidden code on your website that tells search engines and AI tools exactly what your business is, what you offer, your hours, and your location, instead of leaving them to guess from your homepage text.

Sites with it get pulled into AI answers more reliably. Sites without it get skipped.

Quick reality check: before most people ever land on your website, they see your Google Business Profile. If it's got outdated opening hours, no photos, or barely any reviews, you've lost trust before your site even gets a chance.

This is one of the fastest, cheapest wins for any local business โ€” and one of the most commonly ignored.

Quick one for anyone with a business website: there's a new file called llms.txt that tells AI tools what your site is about, so when someone asks ChatGPT to recommend a local business, yours has a better shot at showing up.

It costs nothing to add and takes minutes. Most sites don't have one yet, which means the businesses that add it now get ahead of the curve before it becomes standard practice.
