When I made my Coming Out letter in ceramic it was because I wanted it to outlast the paper version as an artefact of the time. This Daily Mail article from 1993 many gay people have seen and it never gets less extreme to read. And with LGBTQ+ people noticing a shift in acceptance I felt like it was relevant.

I felt like it was important that this wasn’t allowed to be forgotten so made a porcelain and underglaze version that will outlive us all. A permanent reminder.

My coming out letter changed my life twice.

When I originally wrote it I was really struggling for years not knowing why I was like this. And had pulled myself away from friendship groups and was lonely. Then when I came out the fear was gone and I found myself again.

This year, my letter inspired a piece of ceramics that has encouraged me to be an artist. Something my younger self would love. I get to make ceramics and explore messages on clay that work as documents - using the lined paper style of my letter and school textbooks that are a key memory for me. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Today is National Coming Out Day. A day when coming out, inviting in or just being true to yourself is celebrated. October 11th is celebrated globally to remind us it gets better 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️✨

I started my ceramic journey making permanent clay versions of coming out stories knowing that the ceramics lasts forever - outlasting any hateful people that dedicate their lives to making LGBTQIA+ experiences harder.

My own note has always reminded me of how broken I felt before I came out, so I feel that positive power of National Coming Out Day ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤🤎🩵🤍🩷

Celebrating Attitude Magazine awards with so many icons and amazing people. Being under one roof with so much LGBTQ+ love is overwhelmingly beautiful.
