So why do we love the smell of print? Because it's very definitely a thing; we see it every time a new title comes off press and into people's hands. Before they even start to read it, they open it up and give the pages a good sniff.
Part of that is chemistry. Paper, ink, coatings, varnishes and binding materials all release compounds that create that very particular “new magazine” smell.
But there’s more than science going on here. Smell connects closely with memory and emotions, which helps explain why print can feel so familiar and connected in a way that digital doesn't. And why different emotions are triggered by different types of print.
