Here’s a thing we absolutely do not miss about working in a physical office: boardrooms. Not to stereotype, but they’re all bleak, boring, and have those triangle phone-in devices that only work in TV shows like Succession. Happily, this year we’ve conducted pivotal meetings and contract signings at outdoor conventions, artificial wave pools, and, of course, favourite boozers. It’s much more our pace. And our clients’, too.

Our latest ‘business’ get-together? Half-naked, in the middle of a winter-chilled Lake Windermere.

It was a no-brainer to invite expedition specialists Shackleton down to our team open water swim last month in Kendal; outdoors is where we both do best, and where our most effective ideas are formulated. In fact, we swear by cold water as a source of creativity. Our remote set-up means Monday morning meetings often feature directors, account managers, copywriters, and execs fresh out of the sea or lake, supercharged by the post-fight-or-flight high that comes from sub-zero exposure. We can’t recommend it enough.

Getting a gigantic Wheel of Fortune to the Lake District is harder than it sounds.

This was one of the (less important, it has to be said) takeaways from our sell-out Women in Adventure event for Arc’teryx at this year’s Kendal Mountain Festival, where a roster of incredible intrepid women took to the stage with empowering accounts of their life journeys.

The likes of Arc’teryx athletes and , and US-based hiker and diversity champion , entered the hot seat, safe in the hands of host and director of Women’s Trad Festival, , and flanked by our two-metre pillar of TV nostalgia, which they spun to make prize-winners of totally inspired audience members.

How do you end a speaker event that has it all? With an absolute tear-up on the dance floor to the booming tunes of BBC 6 Music DJ Nemone Metaxas, at the Arc’teryx Afterparty. Take a swipe through the carousel for some of our best bits.

Post-it notes, cold water plunges, and trail running PBs.

Kendal Mountain Festival 2022 was all business up front and party at the back for ACM - the stylish mullet of this year’s outdoor industry get-togethers, if you will - with an energised full team Beliefs & Behaviours workshop to kick off day one, and a weekend filled with the events, hi-fives, handshakes, and basecamp brews that Kendal always provides by the bucketload. We even managed to squeeze in one of our famous agency Away Days, too.

Personal highlights? Listing them all would break through the bottom of your screen. But we were particularly proud to see our crew absolutely smash the TERREX 10km trail run with superhuman times (nice one Stu Duggal and Lucy Hewson); beat torrential rain to hike Scout Scar; embrace the 7am Lake District chills for a huge open-water swim; manage fan favourite events including Danner’s Boots & Brews evening, and the Arc’Teryx Women In Adventure session; and deplete our stocks of fluorescent stationery to land on a refreshed and progressive set of culture pillars that’ll further cement ACM as one of the best agencies to work at in 2023 and beyond.

Shout-out to everyone we hung out with through the weekend, too. It was absolutely awesome to see you all.

Kendal 2023, anyone?

There’s no official handbook for landing your dream creative job, but we think this gets pretty close.

For ACM’s Head of Creative & Strategy, Mark Rosenberg, getting paid to do something you love while working with a crew of like-minded people is as good as it gets. Whether or not it surpasses his true favourite pastime - personally assessing the planet’s best waves in search of the perfect left - is yet to be revealed.

If only to cement our travel-loving Aussie’s sentiment, at the time of writing, Mark was mere hours off a plane, having led the finishing multimedia touches to a massively exciting global campaign (more on this soon) in the Dubai desert, alongside a handful of ACM’s finest.

Not that the jet-set lifestyle has gone to his head, mind. The one person wondering “How the heck did he luck out and land his dream job?” more than you, is Mark himself. Especially in an industry where, in his own words, just getting a foot in the door can feel impossible.

So between his creative plate-spinning and pivotal decision-making in all of our client work, overseeing a global team of creatives, booking his next remote working location (Scotland, fyi), and fixing a minor ping of jet lag, we asked Mark to impart his golden advice for anyone seeking a creative job they absolutely love.

Do you remember the first few days of your current job? Instantly forgotten names, tech issues, final-round-of-Tetris levels of political lunchbox stacking in the fridge, more tech issues, and impressively fumbled tea rounds?

Our latest signing, Bella Charlton, simply had no time for any of it. Not least because we’re now a fully remote team and office tea rounds are purely conceptual (tech issues remain, though), but because within a matter of hours - no, we’re not exaggerating - our newest Account Executive was securing her clients column inches in one of the biggest titles on our radar.

But then again, moving fast is in Bella’s nature, having grown up on a healthy diet of alpine ski racing, and quickly stacking her CV with jobs across the ski, travel and outdoor industry. She has the little black book of contacts to prove it, too.

So, you don’t have to look too hard to see why we instantly hit it off. But what really grabbed us by the earlobes in our interview, was learning that, in between her wakeboarding, cold-water swimming, camping, and mountain biking, Bella had found the time to set up a language school in Spain, work in France, and even volunteer with the Red Cross.

Add to the mix that she’s helping to bolster our south-west contingent, basing herself in Bristol, and we think we’ve found a real winner.

We suggest keeping an eye on what she manages to achieve with us here at ACM - blink, and you’ll probably miss it.

Every brand, big or small, seems to be Pritt-Sticking the same images to the same moodboard when it comes to showing inclusivity in its creative content.

While it’s obviously great that the industry is making this a priority, you don’t need to look too closely to see where the failures have come unstuck: doing it right means doing it authentically.

How to harness authenticity was at the centre of our full production rollout for the launch of adidas Swimming’s collaboration with SOUL CAP, and shunning traditional model requirements for a more hands-on and genuine approach the primary factor our hero edit pivoted on.

Let’s face it. Most agency social copy is - to put it politely - a little dry.

“Brand X asked us to do Y. So we did Z.” “We’re delighted to introduce our new client….” And so on.

Which is why, when searching for our new copywriter, we wanted somebody with more imagination and spark.

Somebody with legit journalistic chops, a natural affinity with our culture, more ideas than a desperate Alan Partridge, and the nous to continue the sky-high editorial standards for which ACM is rightly famed. (An unhealthy obsession with fly-fishing would, naturally, be a bonus.)

Step forward Senior Copywriter Chris Sayer: Kernow resident, alumnus of FHM and Shortlist, social media guru, and our new expert word-slinger.

To say he’s slotted in seamlessly would be to flirt gravely with understatement. A couple of months in, he’s already making our copy output sing with his trademark blend of wit and wisdom, and his on-point take on the current marketing landscape.

Behind the scenes, his influence is such that we’re already enthusiastically planning a fly-fishing mission for one of our 2023 away days.

We’re beginning to wonder how we managed without him. Big up, Chris. See you on the riverbank.

Truth be told, we’re not ones for “International This, That, Or The Other Day”’s here at ACM - obvious and dubious corporate motivations behind most of them have us questioning just how big we should go for National Pancake Day 2023, for example.

But today hits differently.

Today is ; an opportunity to take stock of how we’re all doing up top.

We’ve been die-hard advocates of the benefits of the outdoors since day one, each of us turning to different natural spaces for what they give back to us, both physically and mentally. It’s, clearly, one of the biggest reasons why protecting our outdoor playgrounds plays such a gigantic role in every decision we make as an agency.

To mark the occasion this year, we asked a handful of ACM team members what a mental health retreat looks like to them, hopefully with a view to inspiring others to try a new kind of outdoor medication this year…

“I’ve had a fairly major personal challenge to work through over the last few years. Trying to outsmart a fish with little more than a length of line, a spit of fluff, and my all-consuming concentration has been a perfect mental refuge.” - Chris, Senior Copywriter

“Skateboarding helps me focus on the moment, and my surroundings at that time. It helps me move away from any concerns, worries or stress, and channels that energy into something physical and relaxing.” - Lyndsay McLaren, Account Director

“When a ‘wobbly head’ moment arrives, the concentration that climbing requires - as well as the physical movement and problem-solving - gives me a break from any anxiety I may be feeling. I try to get out for a climb in Wales or the Peak District most weekends, and even just knowing I’m heading there helps alleviate any stresses.” - Charlotte Taylorson-Smith-Pritchard, PR & Social Exec

“Escaping the city for a hike in the Brecon Beacons is definitely my mental health refuge. There’s nothing quite like puffing your way up a steep mountain with your favourite people to help ease your troubles.” - Kate O’Brien, Digital Marketing Manager

It’s been a while in the making, but today we take a step towards removing barriers in the outdoors by creating a more welcoming, equitable, and inclusive space for everyone with the establishment of Opening Up the Outdoors (OUTO).

OUTO is a not-for-profit initiative from brands, organisations, community leaders and outdoors experts which strives to ensure that everyone, regardless of religion, gender, sexual identity, or physical ability, is welcomed and included when they step outside.

ACM is proud to support OUTO along with founding members and our friends listed below.

Putting together an ACM social post without our Kate O'Brien is like taking a YETI brimming with steaming hot coffee into the backcountry after leaving its cap in the van: not easy.

It would be, of course, cruel to ask Kate to help us piece together a post about her own promotion. So this one is lacking our oracle of social output’s trademark cool and calm approach to everything leading up to hitting ‘send’. It’ll be a miracle if we manage to upload it without dropping said hot coffee all over our keyboards.

Such is the impact that Kate has made on ACM in the ten months she's worked with us. Jumping on board as a Digital Account Executive back in November 2021, she didn’t miss a beat before getting stuck into huge accounts like adidas TERREX and playing a pivotal role in our multichannel social implementation for international climbing documentary, The Wall.

Since then, Kate’s had no problem in keeping up with the pace, trends, and relentless platform changes in social; mining invaluable data nuggets to help us make our informed strategic decisions; and guiding us in distilling our biggest achievements down to 800 characters or less for caption-ready copy. It’s easy to see why Digital Account Director Ruth has dubbed herself as “basically a one-person Kate fan club”.

As we expand and evolve our digital offerings, Kate’s step-up to Digital Marketing Manager is as deserved as it is exciting. And with her ability and confidence to create and implement scroll-stopping ideas, we know social media is in safe hands.

Sometimes it takes more than sticking your head above the crowd to stand out from it. It takes the courage to leave the crowd altogether and head somewhere totally new.

Our most memorable ideas and experiences have come from the team's confidence to explore fresh ground and unexpected places. So learning that our latest recruit can’t get enough of “the weird parts of Essex” confirmed that he has the round-the-clock creative curiosity that ACM’s culture is built on.

We should probably explain that new Junior Account Manager Max Meadows’s (slightly peculiar) obsession with the out-there areas of southeast England comes from his regular escapes from London on his road bike, during which getting away from the beaten track is just as important as finding a decent brew along the way.

It’s this passion for living outside of the guidebook, as well as deep roots in creative content production and experiential events for some of the world’s biggest brands, that excites us about Max, and what he can bring to a client list that includes Db, adidas and Shackleton. And the chance to work with brands he genuinely loves is just one of the things that brought him to us.

We’re looking forward to seeing where Max’s off-piste approach takes us down the line, both on and off the bike.

We’ve been fully remote for what’s fast approaching three years now and returning to a traditional, office-based setup seems almost inconceivable.

Sure, being spread all over the place poses the occasional challenge, but ditching those old constraints (as well as the commute) has been better for our team and, without geographical limitations to stop us, is helping us bring in some serious talent.

Like our recently acquired Senior Creative and multitalented design whizz, Daniele Chiarantini.

Since joining ACM back in June, Daniele has become a bit of a poster boy for remote working, basing himself in Dublin, London, Mallorca, Florence and São Paulo, and dialing into our weekly catch-ups with some incredible backdrops behind him. And we’re reaping the benefits of his curiosity for new experiences on a daily basis.

Always on hand with a fresh perspective and a totally original idea, Daniele has already displayed a knack for delivering reliably inventive, eye-catching design concepts that surpass every brief he’s given.

With a bagful of awards in his locker (including two Effies), Daniele is now applying his creative magic to our work for adidas, YETI and Arksen, and is unsurprisingly catching the eye of potential new clients too.

Another tick in the pros-of-remote-working column, then.
