Serif or sans serif?
It's one of the first decisions you'll make when creating a brand, and it can completely change how your business is perceived.
Generally speaking, serif fonts tend to feel more traditional, established and classic, while sans serif fonts often create a cleaner, more modern look.
Neither is right or wrong, it all comes down to your brand personality, your audience and the message you want your business to communicate.
In this video, Ryan from our design team explains the difference and why choosing the right font can make such a big impact on your branding and signage.

Not every font works on a sign.
A font might look great on a computer screen, but that doesn't always mean it'll be clear, readable or practical when it's produced as signage or vehicle graphics.
In this video, Ryan from our design team shares some of the biggest dos and don'ts when choosing a font for your business, from prioritising legibility to making sure your font reflects your brand personality.
Great signage isn't just about looking good, it's about being seen, recognised and remembered.

Your sign could look great...and still not work.
Here are three of the most common mistakes we see:
- Not enough contrast
- Text that's too small
- Trying to squeeze too much onto the space [or not using enough of it]

A great sign isn't about fitting everything on.
It's about making sure the right things get noticed.

πŸ’¦ What a transformation!

We absolutely love this partial wrap completed for Mr Bright Drive – Jet Washing & Exterior Cleaning.

Starting with a black van gave our design team a fantastic canvas to work with. Rather than covering the entire vehicle, we incorporated the existing black paintwork into the design and added these vibrant electric blue water graphics.

The result? A van that looks extensively wrapped, delivers huge visual impact and clearly communicates exactly what the business does.

It’s also a great example of how partial vehicle wrapping can deliver a fantastic result without the cost of a full colour-change wrap.

Your van is seen by potential customers every day. Why send it out looking anonymous when it could be advertising your business everywhere it goes?

If your van needs a transformation, talk to The Sussex Sign Company about what we could create for you.

The "font wars" continues...

This time Ryan and Ruby had to choose a font for a florist. πŸ’πŸŒΉ

One went more elegant. One went more traditional & cute. Which would you choose?

Let us know in the comments!
Ryan's font choices, or Ruby's font choices?

Sometimes the smallest design decisions make the biggest difference.

If you only had a logo and font...could you tell which company was the tech business?

Ryan and Ruby each chose fonts for the a company in the industry based on how they visually suit. πŸ“±πŸ’»

Which one do you prefer?

Fonts play a huge role in how people perceive your business, and they're even more important once they become real-world signage.

Choosing a font isn't just about what looks nice.

For a sweet shop, your font helps people instantly understand your brand before they've even stepped inside. 🍬🍭

We gave our design team members, Ryan and Ruby, a challenge to pick fonts for the same sweet shop brief...

Which one would you choose?

At The Sussex Sign Company, we help businesses choose branding that doesn't just look good, but works on real signs, shopfronts and vehicle graphics too.

We absolutely love receiving feedback like this! πŸ™Œ

A huge thank you to Neil at Mr Bright Drive for choosing The Sussex Sign Company to wrap his new work van β€” and for taking the time to share such a fantastic recommendation.

We’re particularly pleased to hear that we made the whole process easy from start to finish. That’s exactly what we aim for.

Great work from Andrew and the team, and we’re delighted to have won another customer for life! ⭐️

Thanks again Neil β€” we wish you many happy and successful miles in the new van. 🚐✨

One of the biggest mistakes we see?
Choosing a font that's simply too thin.
While fine, delicate typefaces might look elegant on a screen, they can become difficult to manufacture, harder to read and much less effective once they're applied to signs or vehicle wraps.
In this video, Ryan compares different fonts to show why bolder, clearer font and typography often creates better signage that's both practical and professional.
Choosing the right font isn't just a design decision, it's an investment in making your business easier to see and remember.
