I L L U S T R A T I O N
~
Earlier this year I was contacted by the team at UCCF: The Christian Unions about creating an illustration based on Luke 23v13-25, which is about the time during the Jewish feast of Passover, where it was the Roman custom to release a prisoner on death row. Pilate suggests the release of Jesus, but the crowds scream for Barabbas’ release instead and call for Jesus to be crucified.

I’m not the best at reading and was nervous to begin with that I’d struggle to pull the key info out. So I made sure I gave myself a good chunk of time to read it through multiple times… and with multiple coffees.

In my head I began seeing all these opposing parallels coming through from the story that I wanted to capture in the illustration:
Dark / Light
Death / Life
Thorns / Plants
Rain / Sun
Bound / Free
~
I decided I wanted to design the illustration in one colour using negative space and areas of symmetry to highlight the opposing parallels.

I loved working on this and I’m so pleased with how it came out 🙏🏼
