AI: Solving Problems You Didn't Know You Had Since 2022

People keep asking me whether AI can help with website content.

The answer is yes.

The slightly longer answer is yes, but preferably with adult supervision.

AI is brilliant for generating ideas, writing first drafts and rescuing you from staring at a blank page wondering how to describe your business.

In many ways, it's like having an incredibly enthusiastic intern.

One who never sleeps, never takes lunch and can produce 3,000 words before you've finished making a cup of tea.

The problem is that those 3,000 words don't always make much sense.

I recently asked AI for some website copy.

It gave me a vision statement and an identity crisis.

Apparently my business was now a "global leader in transformative customer-centric solutions."

I'm a website designer in Brighton.

We've all seen AI copy like this:

"Leveraging innovative solutions to unlock strategic growth opportunities."

Wonderful.

What does the business do?

Nobody knows.

Used properly, AI is brilliant. I use it regularly.

Just don't let it take complete control.

Otherwise you'll end up with a website that's innovative, transformative, strategically aligned and absolutely impossible to understand.

PS: Before anyone asks, yes, the photo is obviously AI-generated. Apparently AI thinks I look like Davina McCall if she'd swapped television for website design. Not sure that is a compliment!

A Day in the Life of a Website Designer

People often imagine website design as sitting in a trendy café, sipping artisan coffee while effortlessly creating beautiful websites.

The reality is slightly different.

9:00am – Open laptop. Check emails.

9:02am – Receive urgent request: "Can we just make one tiny change?"

The tiny change turns out to involve redesigning half the website.

10:00am – Explain for the seventh time this month that a logo uploaded from WhatsApp is not actually "high resolution."

11:00am – Update a website. Everything works perfectly.

11:01am – Refresh page. Everything breaks.

11:02am – Refresh again. Everything magically works.

12:30pm – Lunch.

12:35pm – Eat lunch at desk while trying to work out why a button has suddenly moved three pixels to the left.

2:00pm – Client asks if they can "just quickly" add an online shop.

Of course. We only need products, categories, shipping rules, tax settings, payment gateways, customer emails and about forty-seven other things.

3:30pm – Spend twenty minutes fixing an issue that took four seconds to create.

4:00pm – Explain that Google rankings are not controlled by a giant button marked "Put My Website at the Top."

5:00pm – Website launches successfully.

5:01pm – Client emails:

"Looks great. One tiny thing..."

Despite the occasional technical mystery, disappearing images, broken plugins and emergency Friday-afternoon requests, there's nothing quite like seeing a client's business come to life online.

And honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way.

(Although I would quite like everyone to stop sending logos embedded in Word documents.)

Need help with your website?

I build and update WordPress and Squarespace websites for artists, creatives and small businesses—whether it's a complete redesign or just a few much-needed fixes.

Is web design easy?

Anyone who says web design is easy has never spent three hours trying to centre a button in Squarespace only to discover it was being pushed two pixels left by a rogue setting hidden deep in the website controls.

Web design is one of the few professions where clients ask for things like:
“Can we make it pop more?”
“Can it feel luxurious but approachable?”
“I want it minimalist, but with more things on the homepage.”

Which is a bit like asking an architect to design a cottage that also feels like a nightclub.

Then comes font selection. Hours disappear comparing two almost identical fonts that nobody else can tell apart.

No website project is complete without “a few small amendments,” including rewriting all the text, moving the menu, and “just making it look a bit more Apple.”

Then there is making websites work properly on phones - where a perfect desktop design suddenly turns into chaos. Menus overlap, images float into strange places, and testimonials mysteriously appear halfway down the page.

Thankfully, platforms like Squarespace have removed much of the traditional web design pain, making it far easier to build professional-looking websites without endless coding headaches.

Yet despite all this, web designers continue. Because after battling layouts, blurry client photos from 2007, and strange browser behaviour, there is something satisfying about finally launching a site.

Right before somebody’s aunt emails to say:
“The text looks funny on my iPad.”

If your own website is causing similar levels of emotional damage, or you need help updating or building a new site from scratch, feel free to get in touch. I can help make the process far less painful -and hopefully keep the mysterious floating testimonials to a minimum!

Is There Such a Thing as the Perfect Website Homepage?

Short answer? No. And that’s actually good news.

If you’re an artist, creative, or small business owner, it’s easy to get stuck chasing the idea of a perfect homepage—the right layout, the perfect colours, the exact words that will somehow make everything click. But the truth is, there isn’t one version that works for everyone.

Your homepage isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection.

A photographer’s homepage should feel different to a ceramic artist’s. A tattoo studio won’t look like a handmade jewellery brand—and that’s exactly how it should be. The best homepages reflect you—your style, your work, your personality.

What actually matters is clarity. When someone lands on your site, they should quickly understand what you do, what you offer, and why it’s worth their time. You don’t need to say everything—you just need to say the right things.

Then comes feeling. People don’t just buy products—they connect with stories, aesthetics, and emotion. Your homepage should give a sense of your world, whether that’s bold and expressive or calm and minimal.

And finally, ease. If someone loves your work, don’t make them hunt for it. Make it simple to view your portfolio, shop your products, or get in touch.

The irony is, the more you chase “perfect,” the more your site starts to look like everyone else’s. The more you lean into what makes you different, the more it actually works.

So no—there’s no such thing as the perfect homepage. But there is your homepage. And that’s the one people are really looking for.

If you’ve been overthinking your homepage, this is your sign to simplify. Focus on clarity, show your work, and make it easy for people to connect. If you’d like a second pair of eyes on your site—or help building one that actually reflects you—feel free to drop a comment or send a message.

Why Your Homepage Matters More Than You Think

For artists, creatives, and small business owners, your homepage acts as your digital storefront and first impression. If visitors cannot quickly understand what you do within a few seconds, they are likely to leave without exploring further.

When I recently updated my own website, https://www.emmapapper.co.uk
I focused on making it more engaging, clearer, and easier to navigate. That process highlighted just how important clarity, structure, and intuitive flow are in helping visitors find what they need without feeling overwhelmed.

A strong homepage should answer three key questions straight away: what you do, who it is for, and why it matters. Many people will not look beyond this page, so it needs to guide them effectively with clear messaging, strong visuals, and a simple layout that encourages them to take the next step.

If your homepage is not guiding visitors toward action, they may never reach your portfolio or services. If you have not reviewed yours in a while, now is a good time to take a fresh look. And if you would like feedback or support improving it, feel free to get in touch!

Turning Visitors into Enquiries: Design Tips That Work

Getting traffic is great — but if visitors aren’t getting in touch, your design may be the problem.

Here’s what makes the biggest difference

Tip 1: Be clear, fast
Visitors should instantly know:

- What you do
- Who you help
- What to do next

If they have to think, they’ll leave.

Tip 2: Make your CTA (call to action) obvious
Don’t hide your “Get a Quote” or “Contact Us.”
Place it in the hero section, header, and key pages — especially mobile.

Tip 3: Build trust first
People look for proof before enquiring. Include:
- Testimonials
- Accreditations
- Real photos of your work

Tip 4: Keep forms short
Only ask for essentials. Every extra field reduces enquiries.

Tip 5: Optimise for mobile & speed
Most visitors are on phones. Make buttons thumb-friendly and keep load times under 3 seconds.

If your site gets traffic but few enquiries, the issue is usually conversion — not visibility.

Your website is usually the first place people meet your business — so what kind of first impression is it making?

If it’s been a while since your last update, don’t worry — it happens! But just like your business grows and evolves, your website should grow with it.

Updating your website can mean:

- Faster loading (because nobody likes waiting!)
- A fresh, modern look that builds trust
- Clearer messaging about what you actually do
- A smooth experience on mobile
- Better visibility on Google
- More inquiries and leads

It’s not just about making things “look nicer.” It’s about making it easier for people to understand you, trust you, and choose you.

Your business has moved forward — maybe it’s time your website did too.

If you’ve been thinking about a refresh, I’d be happy to chat and see how we can bring your website up to date. Feel free to send me a message - let’s make it work better for you.

From Canvas to Clicks: How Your Website Shows Your Art at Its Best 🎨💻

Designing a website isn’t just about code: it’s a canvas where creativity meets functionality. For artists, this is where your work can truly shine online. But just how much does web design matter? The numbers might surprise you!

94% of first impressions are design-related - your portfolio speaks before you do.

70% of users judge credibility based on design alone - a polished site makes your art trustworthy.

Mobile-friendly design isn’t optional: over 50% of art lovers browse portfolios on phones or tablets.

Websites with good UX (user experience) keep visitors engaged 2–3x longer, boosting chances of commissions or sales.

Fun fact: the most common color in artist portfolio sites? White ( ) - because your art should shine, not the background!

Your website is more than an online presence - it’s your digital studio, gallery, and first handshake with the world. Take a fresh look through your visitors’ eyes: a few thoughtful tweaks can make a big difference.

Want your website to truly showcase your art? Get in touch - I’d love to help bring it to life!

Why Simplicity Beats Trends in Web Design

Every year brings new website trends, but many prioritize style over usefulness. In 2026, common pitfalls include:

- Oversized / experimental typography that is hard to read
- Excessive animations that distract users and slow sites down
- AI personalization without purpose
- Visual effects like glass or soft 3D styles that clutter pages
- Unintuitive layouts which hide navigation and make tasks harder

Trends come and go, but simplicity lasts. Clear layouts, readable text, and intuitive navigation help visitors immediately understand your site and take action.

Most people do not visit a website to admire design. They want information, solutions, or a quick decision. Simple design removes friction, builds trust, and keeps users engaged.

If you want a website that focuses on clarity, usability, and results rather than chasing every trend, I can help you create one that works for your audience and grows your business.
