Sustainability can be influenced by almost every decision we make online, from how much data a page transfers to how efficiently it is built, how long it remains useful and even how accessible and inclusive it is.

That matters because a website isn’t just a digital object. It sits within a much larger system of devices, networks, servers, energy and human behaviour.

The most sustainable website might not be the one with the smallest carbon footprint.

It might be the one that does more with less, lasts longer and genuinely needs fewer resources in the first place.

AI is digital. Its energy demand isn’t.

The latest ITU research should make anyone working in technology stop and think. Digital companies consumed 494 TWh of electricity in 2024, with AI and cloud infrastructure becoming increasingly significant drivers of demand.

But perhaps the bigger question isn’t how much energy AI uses. It’s whether we are designing the next generation of digital technology with its environmental cost in mind from the beginning.

Every AI model, data centre, website and digital service ultimately depends on physical infrastructure, electricity and resources.

Sustainability needs to be part of how we decide what we build, how we build it and whether the technology delivers enough value to justify the resources it consumes. 🌱

In very simple terms, it is the carbon impact of your website every time someone visits it.

Every page load uses energy, from data centres and networks to the device someone is browsing on.
