Something interesting has been happening recently...

Over the last few weeks, I've had several conversations that started out being about Facebook and Instagram ads and ended up somewhere completely different.

Instead of asking, "Can you run our ads?"

People have been asking:

"How should we market this?"

"What's the best way to attract more customers?"

"What would you do if this was your business?"

It's made me realise that whilst Facebook ads are still very much my bread and butter, what many businesses are actually looking for is someone to help them see the bigger picture.

The truth is, ads work best when they're part of a wider plan.

Sometimes the answer is Facebook ads.

Sometimes it's improving a website.

Sometimes it's email marketing.

Sometimes it's partnerships, PR, networking or simply getting clearer on who you're trying to reach.

I've always found myself naturally looking at the whole marketing puzzle rather than just one piece of it.

So whilst you'll still find me happily buried in Meta Ads Manager most days, you may hear me talking a little more about marketing strategy, business growth and helping businesses connect the dots.

After all, great marketing isn't about doing more marketing.

It's about doing the right marketing.

Well, I genuinely thought my days of being involved in town projects were behind me.

After my time as Chair of the Chamber of Commerce, helping raise thousands for the Gromit Unleashed appeal and various other community adventures over the years, I thought I'd done my bit and quietly retired from town life.

Then Bob Bannister appeared.

And somehow managed to drag me back out of retirement. 🤣

Last week I found myself on ITV News talking about the fundraising campaign to help save Chipping Sodbury's historic Clock Tower.

It's one of those landmarks that has always been there. Part of the backdrop to our town. The sort of thing you don't always notice until it's at risk of disappearing.

It was brilliant to help support the team and raise awareness of the campaign, although I have to say I wasn't quite prepared for the gale force winds that seemed determined to join us for the interview.

I'm not entirely sure what my hair was doing, but hopefully the message got through. šŸ˜‚

All joking aside, it's been fantastic to see so many people getting behind the campaign and supporting a piece of local history that means so much to so many people.

Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared posts and helped spread the word so far.

I've been reflecting on Tuesday's VIP Business Day with AndreaCallanan at Harvey Nichols Bristol.

The food was lovely, the setting was lovely, but honestly, the best bit was having the space to properly think.

As business owners, we're often so busy doing the work that we rarely stop to think about where we're actually heading.

We spent the day talking about Toodlepip Media, what's working, where I want the business to go over the next six months and some exciting opportunities that I probably wouldn't have spotted if I'd stayed buried in my inbox.

I've worked with mentors and coaches before, but what I love about Andrea is her ability to cut through all the noise and get to the heart of what's really going on. Sometimes the answer isn't another marketing tactic or shiny new idea. Sometimes it's simply getting clear on what you actually want.

We're often happy to invest in software, advertising, equipment and training.

But sometimes the best investment is giving yourself the time and space to step away from the day-to-day and think.

Really think.

I came away with pages of notes, plenty of food for thought and a few exciting ideas that I'm looking forward to exploring over the coming months.

A huge thank you to Andrea for a brilliant day.

Now if someone could tell my inbox that I've had a strategy day and therefore shouldn't have to answer emails for at least a week, that would be great. 🤣

ā€œI don’t run ads for everyone.ā€
I know that might sound like a strange thing to say when that’s literally what I do…

But the truth is, the best results never come from just ā€œrunning adsā€.

They come from:
understanding the business
knowing what you actually want more of
and having proper conversations along the way

I’m not here to just press buttons and hope for the best.

I’m here to work with you, figure things out, and actually make it work properly.

And yes… that does usually involve a few voice notes and a bit of ā€œhave you thought about doing it like this?ā€ along the way šŸ˜„

If that sounds like your kind of working relationship, we’ll get on just fine.

A little behind-the-scenes of a recent ads campaign
The brief was simple…
ā€œCan we grow our newsletter sign-ups?ā€

So instead of jumping in and boosting a post, we did what we always do…

Tested different creatives
Tried different messaging
Watched what people actually responded to

And let the data do its thing

Here’s how it turned out:

• 4,500+ people through to the website
• 86,000+ people reached
• Ā£0.13 per click

Which, for context, is a very tidy result šŸ’›

But more importantly…

This is what happens when ads are set up properly from the start
Not guessed, not rushed, not left to chance

If you’ve ever wondered whether your ads could be doing more…
they probably can.

I don’t do a huge amount of organic social media training these days, but this one was a bit special šŸ’›

I was asked to run a session for my local pub, with great friends I actually see most days. And I won’t lie, that felt slightly more nerve-wracking than walking into a room full of strangers 🤣

There’s something about teaching people who already know you that makes you think… they’ll know if I’m winging it here!

But it ended up being such a good session.

I put together a full training slide deck to talk through everything, then we got stuck into the practical side so everyone could have a go themselves. By the end they were all off creating their own content, which is always the goal.

I asked everyone to put together a quick video, and of course Nora the pub dog made an appearance 🐶

This is exactly what social media should be. Real, easy, and just showing what’s already happening.

I popped in to see my very first client this week… šŸ’›
And it really made me stop and think.

Back then, there was no big plan…
He simply asked if I could help manage his social media one day.

That was it.

No agency.
No strategy decks.
No grand vision.

Just a yes… and figuring it out as we went.

Around that same time, I was sat in the sun with a friend, a couple of Toodlepip ciders in hand,
chatting through this ā€œideaā€ I had.

Somewhere between the second and third pint…
I said, ā€œI think I’ll call it Toodlepip.ā€

(proof that some business ideas are better after a couple of ciders in the sunshine šŸ˜…)

And that’s how
Toodlepip Media
was born.

Fast forward to now…

That very first client is still with me.
We now look after both his organic social and his ads,
and what started as a small favour has grown into something much bigger.

And that was nearly 9 years ago.

But the best bit?

It’s never really felt like ā€œclient workā€ā€¦
it’s always felt like being part of the journey.

And I think that says everything about how I like to work šŸ’›

Not all ads are created equal.

And not all ads managers are either.

I was sat in a meeting this morning, coffee in hand, talking through a campaign…
and it reminded me of something I see time and time again.

Running ads isn’t just about budgets or platforms.
Or how quickly you can get something live.

It’s about understanding what you’re actually promoting.

The tone.
The audience.
The feeling behind it.

The difference between something that looks like an ad…
and something that makes people stop and think
ā€˜ā€™that’s exactly my kind of thingā€

Because yes, you can throw money at ads and get them live quickly.

But if they don’t feel right, they don’t land.
And if they don’t land, they don’t convert.

The best-performing campaigns are rarely the loudest or the fastest.

They’re the ones that feel like they belong.

I’ve just had a space open up for a new ads client
If you’re currently relying on organic posts and wondering why you’re seeing the same people engage over and over again… this is your sign.

Meta ads put your business in front of brand new customers, the ones who don’t know you yet but should.

We build proper campaigns, test what works, and turn that into consistent enquiries.
If you’re ready to move things forward a bit, drop me a message and let’s have a chat.

This is basically me in a nutshell
Milo supervising (obviously 🐶), coffee in hand, and a laptop full of ads doing their thing in the background.

What most people don’t see is everything that goes into making those ads actually work…
The testing, the tweaking, the watching numbers, the starting again when something’s off.

It’s not just ā€œboost a post and hope for the bestā€ it’s a proper strategy.

If you’ve ever felt like your business should be reaching more people than it is… you’re probably right.

And that’s usually where I come in šŸ‘€

If you fancy a chat about what that could look like for your business, just drop me a message, always happy to talk things through 😊
