A month today, the way waste sites record what they take in changes for good.

From 1 October, every load arriving at a permitted site in England or Wales has to be entered into Defra's Digital Waste Tracking service within two working days. Every load. Not a monthly return.

The two things we get asked most:

"Won't my weighbridge software do it?" Some will. Worth asking your supplier to confirm in writing that they'll be filing for you from 1 October, and whether it costs extra.

"Can't I just use the spreadsheet upload?" At five loads a week, yes. At fifty it's a job in itself, and every slip is a compliance failure rather than a bit of admin.

We've built something that does it in about a minute a load, with a countdown on every one so nothing quietly runs out of time. Start for free, and tell us your numbers before you commit to anything.

A website that works and a website that's maintained are not the same thing.

Working means it loaded today. Maintained means someone knows what version it's running, whether the backups restore, and which plugins are no longer supported.

The difference doesn't show on a normal Tuesday. It shows the day something breaks — and by then "it was working fine" is true and useless.

Two working days isn't two days.

From 1 October, every load a permitted waste site takes in has to be in Defra's system within two working days — counted from the day after it arrives, weekends and bank holidays left out.

A load in at 9am Monday is due by 11:59pm Wednesday. If the paperwork waits for Friday like it always has, you're already late.

If you run a skip firm or a waste transfer station, something changes on 1 October.

Every load you take in has to go into Defra's new digital system within two working days. Not the paperwork in the cab — their database, load by load.

There's no monthly return to catch up with.

We've written the plain-English version of what it means:

A backup you've never restored isn't a backup. It's a hope.

Most small business websites have backups running somewhere. Very few have ever been tested.

Find your most recent one, restore it somewhere that isn't your live site, and click about. Do the images load? Are the forms there?

Twenty minutes now, or a very bad week later.

Five questions worth asking before you hire anyone to build your website:

Who owns the domain and hosting? What happens when they're on holiday? Are the backups tested, not just taken? What's included after launch? Can I have admin access to my own site?

If you can't answer the backup one about your current site, start there.

Most small businesses find out their website needed looking after on the day it stops working.

Managed WordPress hosting, £60 a month. We move the site for you, keep it updated, check it monthly, and take daily backups we actually restore from.

Move to us and a full site check and clean-up is included free. Or £249 as a one-off if you'd rather stay where you are.

Three things slow most small business websites down.

Photos uploaded straight from a phone, far bigger than the page needs. Old plugins installed once and never removed. And cheap hosting shared with hundreds of other sites.

The first two are free to fix and take an afternoon. The third is the one that costs money, and it is usually the real culprit.

The five-minute WordPress health check, for people who don't do this for a living.

Your version. Dashboard, bottom right. Anything below 6.9.5 or 7.0.2 needs updating today.

Your users. Users → All Users. Every admin should be someone you can name. Check the email addresses too, not just the names.

Your backups. Not "do I have backups" — when did you last restore one and confirm it worked? An untested backup is a hope.

Your plugins. Anything not updated by its developer in over a year is a liability, however well it currently works.

Who owns this. If the honest answer is "the guy who built it, but I haven't heard from him since 2023", that's the actual risk. Everything above is fixable in an afternoon. That isn't.

None of this needs a developer. Number 5 might.

If your business has a WordPress website, it's worth two minutes of your time today.

A serious flaw in WordPress itself — not a plugin, the actual software — has been publicly exploitable since 22 July. Sites are being scanned and compromised automatically. Most owners have no idea until their web host takes the site offline.

Updating fixes it going forward. It doesn't tell you whether anything got in beforehand.

We've spent the last fortnight checking sites for exactly this. Not sure about yours? Send us a message or use the link and we'll take a look.
