CEASE (Centre to End All Sexual Exploitation) is a national human rights charity, with a mission to expose and dismantle the cultural and commercial forces driving all forms of sexual exploitation in the UK.
Last year, Head of Communications, Jo, contacted us for ongoing support with the creation of report materials. One of those, being their Annual Report document for 23/24.
The brief was to create a stylised, design heavy report, which was engaging, factual, and easy to digest. With special focus on expanding and balancing the current brand application within the parameters of the already established guidelines.
It was particularly important to consider the use of the brands neon blue. From a publishing point of view, as well as an accessibility point of view, ahead of any considerations the charity might make to change this in the future. Using the blue as an ‘accent only’ (rather than blanketing or blocking the colour as before) where it didn’t interfere too much with text placement minimised issues for a short-term solution.
Stylising elements, using icons, interacting imagery with the content on the page, as well as designing as spreads, rather than in isolation, allowed for more creative freedom and a more seamless flow to the document - going a long way to address the lack of creativity of any previous report material.
Photography choice is always particularly sensitive and sometimes too literal in this sector. Images are usually emotive, which is key but rather than being heavily negative, there’s a now a balance with images that are ‘inspirational and elevated’. Images that conjure up freedom, dignity, and hope. Aligning to the charities end goal of ‘freedom’ - “a world without sexual exploitation”.
The end result was an A4 printed booklet and interactive report. The full document can be found here: https://cease.org.uk/2023-24-annual-report/
