Core Web vitals - Important for your SEO!

Google has and is continuing to add 3 new page ranking factors to their long list of 200+ other factors.

Normally they are a little hush-hush with what they are updating but this time they are telling use exactly what we need to look at.

The fact they are telling us what these are means that they are important and need to be actioned.

The updates are designed to help deliver the best experience to people surfing the internet and using Google. Google will be promoting the best user experience

For now, the three pillars of page experience are:
Loading performance (how fast does stuff appear on the screen?)
Responsiveness (how fast does the page react to user input?)
Visual stability (does stuff move around on the screen while loading?)

Now there are many items that make up each of these three pillars.

In a nutshell though your site needs to load content and scripts FAST

It needs to load in a way that the user can start using it ASAP

The site also needs to be stable and not move around (offering a negative experience) this is known as Content Layout Shift (CLS)

The article above is really good so little reason to rewrite what is already written.

Google has already started rolling out these changes so these do deserve your attention as they will affect your search engine rankings.

Top Tip: Make sure you are using Google Search Console - this is how Google will notify you of items that need addressing and also loads of other important information.

DO NOT LISTEN TO PUBLIC OPINION

People lie, data doesn’t.

Although it’s more important than ever to have a mobile friendly website DO NOT be fooled into thinking that all visitors are using their phones.

This screenshot is of a clients site, they were obsessed with doing everything on mobile, mobile, mobile, mobile . . . Proper obsessed.

All because they heard that’s what they were supposed to do “no one uses a desktop anymore”

Utter rubbish. Total BS.

I showed them the below data from the last week or so.

70% on desktop
30% on mobile

Needless to say they changed their tune.

Yes the 30% is important but use your time and resources wisely, look after the 70% first.

Please - check your data, it won’t lie very often to you.
