Performance Max has transformed what is possible in Google automotive advertising. It has also introduced a costly failure mode for luxury brands that deploy it without sufficient strategic rigour.

The format operates across every Google channel simultaneously: search, display, YouTube, Discovery, Maps and more, optimising in real time towards your defined goal. But that power is directional. Point it at the wrong signals and it will find results efficiently in entirely the wrong direction.

For a luxury SUV brand, the buyer profile is specific. The intent signals are nuanced. A PMax campaign built on generic asset groups and broad audience signals will spend its way to lead volumes that look reasonable on paper and disappoint in practice.

The answer is not to avoid Performance Max. It is to build the strategic architecture that makes Google's automation work for a premium audience rather than in spite of one.
