On May 19, 2026, at its annual Google I/O developer conference, Google announced what it described as the biggest upgrade to its Search box in over 25 years — and for businesses, the implications are huge. For nearly three decades, Google Search worked the same way: you type a query, you get a list of links. That model is now being replaced. Google has rebuilt Search around AI, powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash, its latest and most powerful model. The new intelligent search box accepts text, images, files and video, dynamically expands as you type, and is designed to understand your intent and synthesise a direct answer — rather than sending you to a website. Google also introduced “information agents” — AI agents that run in the background 24/7, monitoring the web and sending users synthesised updates on topics they care about, without them ever needing to type a search. This means the traditional model of “rank on Google → get clicks → get customers” is changing fast. Businesses that have relied on SEO and organic search traffic for years are already seeing the effects, and this update accelerates that shift significantly.

If I started a service business from scratch tomorrow, here’s exactly what I’d do. First — I’d get my Google Business Profile set up and fully optimised. Day one. Non-negotiable. Second — I’d build one simple landing page. Not a full website. Just one page that explains what I do, who it’s for, and how to book. Third — I’d run a small Google Ads campaign. Because I want to be in front of people who are already searching for what I do — not hoping they scroll past me on Instagram. And that’s it. No dancing. No daily posting. No going viral. Just show up where people are already looking. Most service businesses never do these three things properly — and then wonder why growth feels so hard.
