I recently completed this memorial in Cumbrian green slate.

I was commissioned to create a new piece in keeping with an existing family memorial, echoing its distinctive style. It features some beautiful letterforms that required careful, precise cutting.

The lettering is incised and hand-painted.

We chose Caithness stone for its riven texture and subtle colour variations. Over time, the stone will continue to change through oxidisation — a quiet reminder that memory and nature are always evolving.

Large St Bees memorial with kerb set.

The family and I worked together to develop ideas ​and select the right material for the memorial. The result is a substantial stone with informal, deeply cut letters and gilded stars.

Hi, I’m Fiona – a lettercutter and carver, based in Cambridgeshire. 👋

I’m a mother of two, passionate about creating with my hands, listening to music and a strong cup of tea! ☕🎶

I have over 15 years’ of experience working with British stone and slate. My journey began as a graphic designer, but my love for hands-on creativity gave me itchy feet. So after 12 years in design, I took time out to travel and the exposure to different cultures and artistry led me to discover the craft of lettercutting. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a new career.

The experience I’d acquired through my design work along with the new skills and dexterity I learnt on courses and as an apprentice to the renowned lettercutter and lettering designer Tom Perkins, enabled me to set up my own stone business. I’ve since dedicated myself to mastering the traditional craft techniques used to work in stone, which I continue to embrace and develop today.

Now, I create custom pieces and sell my work privately – from memorials and commemorative plaques through to garden stones, wedding gifts and much more.
