A LOT has changed over the past 7yrs in business
But it’s these last few that really shook things up…

Becoming a single parent was by far the biggest challenge I ever faced to date

It’s not easy to admit (to yourself or anyone else) when your design business just isn’t working for you.

But that’s where I was in April 2019.

Instead of enjoying some family time…

I was sitting alone at a tiny hotel table, working on my laptop, rattling out the work that had overspilled into my family holiday

Completing the ‘urgent’ client request that had come in last minute and couldn’t possibly wait until I was back…

While my family were outside enjoying the sun, splashing and playing around…

It suddenly dawned on me - I had agreed to this!

I was the one that had said yes, sure, no problem…

Packed my laptop along with my cozi and sunglasses without hestitation

It hadn’t even occurred to me to say no and push back.

And as a result the very things that were so important to me

The reasons I set my business up in the first place - the freedom and flexibility (as well as control over income)…

Were virtually non existent.

So enough was enough.

At that moment I wasn’t willing to compromise any more.

From that point on I committed to building a business that worked for me, my happiness and my family life.

Rather than putting up with a business that consumed all the time, headspace and energy I had just to keep it going…

You get to decide too.

You get to protect what’s important to you while you achieve the goals that are just as important.

Let’s just take the pressure off for a minute shall we 😅

You don’t have to be a ‘better’ designer to start charging more.

The truth is: you’re a great designer who deserves to feel valued NOW

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a sucker for a design tutorial, learning the latest shortcut in Illustrator, I always want to be growing as a designer…

But when it comes to pricing your services, there is no design skill level that allows you to qualify for a pay rise…

So if you’re looking to your design skills to make you feel confident…

Waiting to feel ‘good enough’ to put up your prices…

You’ll stay stuck undercharging for far longer than you need to.

And I don’t want that for you.

What you charge is more about the value you create for the clients you work with.

What is it that the people you design for are able to achieve as a result of working with you?

If you design visual identities, what does this enable your client to achieve as a result?

It could be time saved, increased exposure, an emotional connection with their target market…

But how do they or their business change as a result?

What’s the transformation you’re helping to create?

Understand this and you’ll unlock the door to confidently charging more a lot quicker than designers who only focus on showcasing their skills and telling clients how they are the best at picking out fonts…

If you want to grow your design business without the hustle, understanding your value is the game-changer.

Being busy isn’t the aim of your Design Business.

Not if you want it to be profitable with room to grow.

It took me ages to realise this…

I thought the fact I was busy, had lots of client and work requests meant it was all going well…

I’m busy! Sooo busy! That’s good right?

Except it wasn’t. It was actually pretty miserable.

I was so busy I got to work evenings and weekends…

Felt preoccupied ALL the time which meant any time off I had I didn’t enjoy which left me felting guilty about not making the most of time with my family…

But I couldn’t seem to break the habit of saying ‘yes’ to every request that came in because saying no just felt too risky!

What if I turned it down and then I had no more work… 😱

So I lived in fear that work would dry up at any minute…

I kept accepting the same work and staying stuck.

Maybe you relate?

And so I continued until I hit breaking point…

Which looks different for everyone but for me it was suddenly becoming a single parent.

And realising the way I was working no longer worked.

I could have made changes before this but I didn’t. I waited until it was an absolute s**t show of events.

But you don’t have to wait to reach breaking point to make the changes that unlock your time and profit in your design business.

Two years into my design business I was ready to call it quits.

My schedule felt messy, I was constantly juggling multiple clients at once, jumping from one task to the next, often feeling swamped with work I secretly didn't want to do.

I had a steady stream of clients but I felt drained and somehow my hard work never seemed to translate into my bank account. To say it was frustrating was putting it mildly!

🙋‍♀️ Perhaps you can relate?

But then in 2019, I suddenly became a single parent and faced with being the sole provider for my two children, I knew things had to drastically change.

Even though I felt massively out of my depth it was the wake up call and motivation I needed to make the changes I had been putting off for ages.

✨ So I took the leap.

I learnt how to play a bigger role for my clients as a creative director, added value to my services, learnt brand strategy so I could help solve bigger business problems and get paid for my thinking, invested in coaching and significantly raised my prices & income as a result.

Now I have a business that no longer drives me into the ground but instead gives me space to work with 1 client at a time, create work that feels full of purpose and impact and pay myself consistently well in the process.

If only I’d know then what I know now - it would have completely changed the trajectory of my business!

🤩 Ready to get unstuck and earn more in your design business?

I’m looking for 5 brand designers who are ready to double their income in the next 4 months without doubling their client workload or hours.

So many designers aren't earning anywhere near the level of income they could have and the sad truth is that they're not building a business that lights them up and makes the most of their creative skills either…

A design business that gives them the choice to cherry pick the best projects and clients, creative freedom to produce amazing work, take time off easily and get paid really well in the process.
Instead, they experience:
