Happy World Book Day!

I remember when WBD was also a collab with publishers who produced special editions of books to hand out, to encourage reading. There was a social group online where we shared ideas and it was quite a giddy day.

It passes me by now though kudos to the parents doing Where's Wally this morning. My neighbours children walked past me and Molly. We did the 'pretend not to notice .... oh there you are!' thing.

Currently I have 10 books at different stages of design and production in my designer life, with publishers and self-publishers across non-fiction and education. This brings me joy!

We book designers do more than fonts.
- we make it easy for your readers with secret super power interior design as it supports the text and guides, but readers notice if it's wrong - think a poor point size, wrong font for the genre, huge margins, text lost between the gutter (the binding) and long, exhausting, line lengths.
- we create flawless PDF files for print because there's nothing so pants as endless messages from IngramSpark and KDP with file errors and we'll deal with the niggles too
- we take off the load so that you can plan your speaking events, build up an email list, write the next book, plan the book launch or just collapse into a chair and think, 'blimey I wrote a book'
- we can be a cheerleaders, because it's more than design. You get a shout out in my newsletter, mentioned on my socials and I'll even turn up to your book launch if you want talk about design.

The National Literacy Trust shared studies that show connections between regular reading and mental wellbeing and this is huge as books are generally easy to find via libraries, Little Free Libraries, gifts or lends from friends or indie book shops. I love reading, it's like a dose of calm or a distraction.

There are four ways I can help you be an author with costs that will work for your budget.
- a one to one consultation to help you improve your book or solve a problem
- Hello Lovely Learning is my learning hub, and you can sign up to "Self Publishing Foundations" for very helpful self-study course from writing to book launch via lessons on editing, design, page planning, marketing, promotion and websites.
- a VIP day to get you started on a book design, we can create a template that you can use or you can pass to a formatter or typesetter.
- Bespoke design, which means I'll provide practical support from editing to publication, I can even create your author brand and your website, and set up your email marketing and support you along the way.

Happy Monday ... what's happening for you in the next 7 days?

For Hello Lovely Design and Co I am creating a new WordPress website with developer, Wise Genius, and I'm excited by the site map and a simple site logo. I have repeat branding work/refresh, and another client's books have sold so well that he's ordering more copies! Also updating Design Foundations so it's ready for a Spring launch, and wondering if that requires a Launch Party?

It is getting busy, but there's space for VIP days, 1-2-1's and bespoke design. Drop me a DM, I'd love to help you with design problems, branding, print and website design.

On the Full Stop we're catching our breath before booking in May and June guests. There's an Other's Day chat and podcast recording in our Community on 15th March (spoiler: join with your first month free on us). Ask me if you're childless not by choice; it's super friendly and very supportive, and you can join the live podcast recording and quiz our guests.

This week I'll be at Freelancer Magazine Masterclass, Rachel Extance Writing Club, and Drive the Collaborative Network. It's also Cowork Crew which is coworking in real buildings including Cambridge and London. I'll miss this month, as it's my birthday at the weekend (hiding under a duvet).

For the planet, I'm avoiding ChatGPT (also see how it's being used by Trump) and ordering bare-root roses and enjoying the promise of bulbs coming into flower.

How's your week looking? Let me know in the comments.

Really pleased to share this with you today. Emma’s brand for The Freelance Lifestyle is well established and recognised so it was important to maintain this in the cover. It was developed with appropriate fonts to create an eye catching cover that works across her platforms and is on brand. I’m so pleased to see this and, having been around fan of Emma’s work for many years, I am delighted to work on this. It’s going to be a great read and enormously helpful for freelancers.

A fascinating video on the origins of ‘stationery’ and the right to print (if only such a thing applied to misinformation these days!) Have you been here?

When I was much younger, we went to Cardiff from Cambridge and back in a day. My teacher at school didn’t believe me.

My grandparents came with us and it was the first time I had a meal on a train.

The reason we could do this was down to Sir Kenneth Grange. He was commissioned by British Rail to design the livery. He took the initiative redesign the entire train so that it would have better aerodynamics, creating the distinctive ‘nose’ which meant the train could reach speeds of 125mph.

Growing up I must’ve travelled thousands of miles on these trains. My dad ran Merry Maker day train trips to places previously impossible to get to within 24 hours. Often to York and definitely to Penzance. The roar of the Paxman Valenta engine defined speed.

Grange exceeded the design brief to create something that’s lasted longer than ever anticipated. During the 80s, British Rail was failing with broken down, noisy diesels and old carriages that could not hold the volume of people who needed to travel. The HST made train travel interesting and efficient with better speed and more seating capacity.

This weekend the HST (High Speed) trains were retired, though there are still some operational in Scotland. Unlike steam trains which were scrapped, these will have a second life in Mexico.

It’s one reason I rate British Rail design as its largely endured. It was recently redesigned again, with its routes in the iconic double arrow track logo or ‘Railway 2’ as it is called.

Transport design, like many forms of design, is only noticed when it’s wrong or not present. It allows us to navigate and, thanks to Grange, go faster.

Nobody does a winter fair like Mill Road. Me and my dear friends visited via churros at Gwydir St car park. Then a visit to the former Mill Road Library, and the fabulous entertained us as we crossed bridge for a trip down memory lane via William Smith Close, then up and back to for refreshments and beat coffee, and for lunch, via Petersfield to home 11k steps and it was amazing. It’s an enormous honour to live in such a brilliant, diverse town. Thanks to all at for your magnificent hospitality and here’s to 20 more years.

Soup always makes me feel better. I can take my time and make it on the stove or pop it into the soup maker but I’m always thinking about the ingredients and good taste, being a bit inventive. It doesn’t make me a cook but I can learn from them and visit restaurants to pay for a better experience as they take the load off and it’s almost certainly better. This soup was thrown together from fennel bulb, peas, spinach, leeks, onion, some left over coconut milk and some vegetable stock. No measurements because it’s a riff. I know when to consult an expert.

How do you create well with an app? After all, Canva, Affinity, and Adobe give you the tools, but they don't teach design or tell you when you need a professional designer. It can be overwhelming. What font works with which, and how to break out of a template. The newsletter offers solutions so you can make better choices for your website, book, print product, or digital work. Even better, you can download a PDF on sign-up with instant help.

Happy Dog Person Day!

Are you a dog person? I’ve been a dog person all my life. My grandparents has 18 dogs over the years since I was born, all rescues, or ‘my favourite breed’ so it’s no surprise that Molly is a rescue. I waited years to have my own dog as I know the care they require and it was worth every second. In the meantime we had a cat and I walked dogs for The Cinnamon Trust, a charity who helps people who are seriously ill or ageing to keep their pets with them.

I’m the person, at the party, who loves it when the dog sits with me and always happy to walk a dog. I can’t imagine a life without a dog.

If you follow We Rate Dogs, which raises awareness of rescue dogs in the USA and fundraises for emergency vet care, then you’ll know about this day. I love their ‘tell your dog I said hi’ merch!

Tell me: what would you like to know about design?

Are you figuring out fonts, gridlocked by grids, uncertain about what good design is and long to escape from templates. Learning the fundamentals about design can help you feel confident.

I'd love to know what you'd like to learn. Drop a comment or pop me a DM!
