🏡👻 Ever Wonder Who Keeps Hiding Your Keys?

Did you know that centuries ago, many Welsh families believed they shared their homes with a bwbach — a little household spirit?

In old North Wales, the bwbachod were like our version of brownies or hobgoblins. People said they lived by the hearth, in the barn, or anywhere warm and busy with work.

These helpful spirits were said to sweep floors, churn butter, guard the animals, and even fix broken things — but only if they were treated well. Every night, families would leave out a bowl of cream or a piece of bread by the fire as a thank you.

But beware — if the bwbach felt disrespected, it could turn tricky! Sour milk, hidden tools, creaking floorboards at night… all blamed on a grumpy bwbach.

One old tradition in North Wales was to keep a special stool near the fire — stôl y bwbach — just for the spirit to sit on while it watched over the household. Some stories say that if a family moved house, they’d even leave out a treat at the new home to persuade the bwbach to come with them — or risk bad luck if it stayed behind!

The bwbachod remind us how deeply connected our ancestors were to the hearth, the farm, and the belief that every home had its secret guardian.

It’s a lovely bit of hidden Welsh history — and maybe a good excuse next time you lose your keys or the milk goes off! 😉✨🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
