In my non work capacity i am Chairman of Winscombe Rugby club, the only UK rugby club with charitable status we have over 1000 members run three senior teams and on a Sunday have over 300 Mini and Junior players training and enjoying matches.
4 years ago we decided to start running girls rugby at U13 and U15 level. These teams progressed to U13, U15 and U18 level as they grew up.
So from a standing start, by working together and drawing knowledge from the rest of the club and with the support of their parents, these fantastic young ladies have progressed to become Somerset, South West and Now - last Sunday
- DOUBLE NATIONAL Champions at the older two age groups. The first time this has been done.
And all from a little village in Somerset.
What was the one thing i noticed when watching both finals? Not the skill levels, the attitude to run the ball, not the intensity but the communication.
The players didn't need guidance or shouted instructions from the sidelines they talked and communicated and worked out the problems and issues they faced.
I and the whole club (and south west rugby) am so immensely proud of them, their parents and coaches. The attached picture says it all.
