When I talk to clients about email marketing the most common comment I hear is “I don’t want to be a spammer.”

This says a lot about the view of email marketing – it’s seen as unwanted junk landing in your inbox. In other words it’s got a bad reputation – but why?

You don't want to do that to your contacts, but what's the point in growing a list if you can't market to them?

The secret is in how you engage with them when they sign up to your list. You should have a value-driven series of emails that go out over the 2-4 weeks after someone signs up to your list. Each email shares something useful - it's like a little gift landing in their inbox every few days.

Then, at least once a month, send a useful newsletter, stuffed with more value.

If they're still engaged, they're interested. The occasional offer, delivered because you know it will help them and highlighting all the benefits they'll get from saying 'yes', will be easy to accept and won't destroy your list.

There was a time when visitors would actually read 300 words of copy – not any longer! If the headline doesn’t give them the information they want, they’ve gone.

The days of intriguing headlines that require the visitor to make an effort to find out if the copy will give them what they want are pretty much ancient history. People want instant gratification.

What does this mean for your website?

The first headline they see needs to tell the visitor – ‘We’ve got what you want’ – or, better still – ‘You’ll get the information you came here for easily and quickly’."

Nobody likes to see that unsubscribe notification pop up. But it's going to happen. The question isn't whether people will leave your list; it's why they leave, and what you can do about it before they get to that point.

Understanding why people unsubscribe is one of the most useful things a B2B business can do to improve its email marketing. It forces you to look at your newsletter through your reader's eyes.

Are you facing a blank page again?

If writing isn't your thing, content generation can be a complete nightmare. To be honest, even as a writer, sometimes inspiration doesn't strike. That's why I've got a plan.

I have a list of topics for blogs, covering all the core services I offer to clients - and then I have another list of approaches to apply to the topic. It looks a bit like a matrix. It means that I look at the core subject and pair it with the approach and then write about that. Even with only six core subjects and five approaches - that's material for 30 social media posts, blog articles, value leads for my newsletters, tips for my email marketing campaigns, etc. etc.

You can make videos for YouTube, do a podcast, turn a set around one core subject into a lead magnet. And you'll find that you can then rinse and repeat!
