Wow! Last time I checked it was March… I started the year with good intent to keep the grid up to date yet here we are at the end of June. Another financial year end. It’s actually ten years since we took the helm of good ship Maple Rock 🎂🎉🥳

So what have we been up to in the last six months (the first flying fully solo 😬!!)

1. Built two custom React web applications. Its growing on my slowly after many years of Vue.
2. Delivered a multilingual, secure static website with progressive enhancement (fully functional without JavaScript)
3. Launched our first full WordPress block theme 🎉
4. Designed lots of things…multilingual documents, posters, exhibition stands, brochures, flyers.
5. Illustrated/designed custom T-shirts👕
6. Ongoing Laravel & WordPress support for existing clients
7. Website consultancy: upgrades, performance, SEO & future-proofing
8. Expanded the print studio 🖨️ • Large-format printer added. Still finding my way around this machine but we’re getting there! • Heat press upgraded
9. All whilst fighting the Ai slop 🤖Powered by human creativity = my brain, my experience 💪

Dusted off the camera for some event photography last week. Nice to make use of real life skills... Got us thinking, with the saturation of AI slop. Is photography the only creative skill where it can’t step on your toes? Real life moments, captured in real time by a human 🤖📸

February was another busy month here at MRD Towers – mostly on the technical side. Highlights below:

1. Website refresh – We revisited a website we originally built back in 2017 and brought the homepage up to date with a much more modern look and feel using modern CSS techniques. We removed a lot of clutter and reduced the number of scrolling banners, resulting in a much improved user experience.
2. Kiosk application – A fun “little” project, this one…
The brief: a user scans a QR code which then plays a relevant video, while locking access to all other applications whilst the app is running.
The solution: a local web server running on the device and an app built with HTML and JavaScript. We simply dropped the files onto the tablet. As with most projects there were a few challenges along the way, but the end result was 😘📱
1. WordPress site development – Ongoing development of an exciting new website that we’re hoping to launch later in the spring. For the first time, we’re fully embracing the block editor with a bespoke block theme. As with any new tech, there have been a few challenges plus a lot of learning, but we’re finally starting to make real headway. The finished site will give the client much more flexibility when creating their own custom layouts. Really looking forward to seeing this one come to life soon ⏳

Getting behind the camera again in a professional setting was a fantastic experience. It had been some time since I last picked up my Nikon, and it felt great to be back.

While photography has always been a passion, like many creatives I’m always battling imposter syndrome, but the truth is—there’s no reason to hold back. The positive feedback and results speak for themselves, and I really should have confidence in my ability.

Last night, I had the pleasure of returning to public speaking at the local WordPress Meetup—my first time since before Covid! It felt great to connect with the community again and share ideas.

When I first planned my talk, I thought, I’m sure I can find some ways to keep things simple. But as I prepared, I realised that everyone’s idea of “simple” is different, and when it comes to WordPress (or websites in general), simplicity is often easier said than done.

Still, I shared some strategies to simplify WordPress workflows, especially around themes & the block editor, plugins, and leveraging your server’s capabilities. My takeaway? Focus on being consistent, embrace the power of CSS, and build from there—step by step and don't be a "bull in a china shop" or "use a sledgehammer to crack an egg"

If you’re local and use WordPress, I'd highly recommend joining us. It’s a fantastic opportunity to network and socialise with like-minded folks (minus the politics). The next one is in February—hope to see you there! 🙌

So that’s a wrap for another year! With 192 projects lovingly crafted, one office move, and many “can you make the logo bigger” requests along the way 🙊, it’s been a blast! We’ve got some exciting projects in the pipeline for 2025, but we always have room for more! Whether it’s design or web development, we’ve got you covered.

Always lovely to receive feedback like this from our clients 🎺 Followed up with the work we’ve done to date. We started with a logo and have slowly built the brand assets from there. You don’t always have to do everything in one go, but it does help if you start with a solid foundation 🖍️ Worth using the professionals and not using a 🤖😉
