Hotels around the UK are putting their best foot forward in lockdown and developing innovative plans, supporting community initiatives and creating new approaches in an effort to prepare for post-Covid business.

At Seaham Hall, community is playing a big part in shaping its lockdown activities. From supporting the NHS to boosting team morale and wellness, the hotel in Durham is working hard on running a number or initiatives.

Throughout lockdown 1.0, chef and his team worked with The Dining Room charity meal exchange to prepare 500 meals each week for the NHS key and supported October half terms with 100 free school meals per day.

Continuing their efforts into 2021 Seaham Hall partnered with East Durham Trust on a number of initiatives, including: A regular supply of essential store cupboard and household supplies for food banks; Volunteer schemes to support the trust by organising and delivering donations to various local areas; Holistic wellbeing workshops during the recovery phase of Covid-19 and volunteer teams are currently being accumulated and will be deployed as additional support.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, we partnered with Nights On Us, an initiative that saw luxury hotels offer free nights to hard-working ICU nurses. Last month, our custom-built booking platform opened and all 6,200 rooms on offer have now been claimed. This means that ICU nurses have been gifted £1.2 million worth of luxury hotel stays - we can't think of anyone who deserves a break more!

Back in March, at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, Journey wrote an open letter appealing to OTA's. In a bid to support and save an industry that would be hugely affected by the pandemic, we asked them to revise their advertising rates and commissions to help hotels stay afloat during the downturn.
We are delighted to see that Expedia, one of the largest OTA's, has taken notice of this lobbying and are looking at ways of supporting the hotel industry by offering different forms of marketing support.
.
This much-valued support comes in many guises, but essentially represents $250m in marketing credits and financial relief for our industry.
.
In light of this, our advice is that all hoteliers who partner with Expedia should contact them directly to see what support they are entitled to claim.
We are delighted to continue to champion and advocate for the recovery of the travel industry and hope this will offer some relief to many of you affected.

If there is one thing we as a business have learnt through this experience, it is that in the face of uncertainty new opportunities can often present themselves. For us, that has come in the form of giving back to our community through an incredible initiative, that seeks to reward those who have cared for us the most and also boost the hospitality industry.
“Nights on Us”, at its core, aims to say a resounding and collective “thank you” to our NHS ICU workers for all they have been doing to save lives in the UK.
It offers ICU workers complimentary stays at partner hotels once this global crisis is over. Rewarding them with some well-deserved rest and relaxation following months of extreme self-sacrifice.
We have already partnered with some world-leading brands, including The Savoy London, Grantley Hall, Rocco Forte and Doyle Collection who have committed to this vision and cause. The intention is to build momentum and grow this even further, with a target of 100,000 room nights across the country.
We would love for you to spread the word and get involved, by either pledging a stay at your property or passing the message on to a frontline worker you feel deserves this experience.
