Producing award-winning sausages, pork scratchings, field kitchen spices and the ultimate scotch egg is no easy feat. After successfully attracting the backing of Peter Jones when appearing on the Dragons’ Den show, Paul Turner has taken the Alf Turner company to impressive new heights.

Alf Turner partnered with ABP Meats for production & distribution, and Goulding Media to provide creative input for the packaging of two new exciting product launches. The first became ‘The Headbanger’, a pork and ale sausage made using Robinsons’ Trooper Light Brigade beer – developed in conjunction with heavy metal legends Iron Maiden – and inspired by the band’s 1983 song The Trooper. The second is a relaunch of their national award-winning Best of British Sausage, a traditional pork sausage made using a delicate blend of herbs and seasoning to create a subtle yet distinct flavour.

Simplicity with style was a key aim for the new packaging. We felt that the old Best of British packaging looked unbalanced and difficult for consumers to clearly navigate the packaging. The Alf Turner brand mark was refreshed to feature a new tagline ‘Three Generations of Great British Butchers’ and the important help for heroes logo was updated using their current guideline.

The centre piece of the Best of British design features a Union Jack which cleverly symbolises British ingredients with a scattered silhouette shape of herbs and seasonings which are used in the product recipe.

For the Headbanger product we created a new title style, narrow set letters with a grunge effect skull silhouette replacing the letter ‘A’ as a recipe link to the Iron Maiden tribute ale flavour. Various options were developed including a wet look Light Brigade Beer bottle, but the final design was chosen for its clean simplicity.

It’s been a pleasure to work with Alf Turner’s and develop some spectacular packaging design. They continue to see strong sales and have achieved new listings beyond the initial launch in Morrison’s. You can find their products available in Morrison’s, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Asda, The Co-operative, Bookers, Spar and One Stop.

Crilly’s are Ireland’s biggest producer of hard boiled sweets, and one of the few remaining producers in the UK. It was a natural extension to develop a new range of menthol sweets to combat chills and sore throats, and given the UK market for over the counter cough and cold remedies is worth an annual £420 Million, a good quality product has the opportunity to thrive.

After several years in secret development, Crilly’s turned to Goulding Media as their preferred packaging partner. We worked together to create branding, packaging, and marketing which would build excitement and gain orders before the first production run.

The process began by considering naming of the brand and interaction in packaging & marketing including basic aesthetics. During this phase we developed detailed mood boards, colour palettes and loose sketches of filigree patterns (identified early as a key component we wanted to carry through the creative).

After the research & development phase, Mr. Crilly’s emerged as the brand name of choice for the new range. Goulding Media then worked up full packaging concepts, detailed illustrations and demonstrated how the range would expand and accommodate new flavours using a consistent theme.

Once the creative was complete, we finalised the pack design with legal copy layout allowing the Crilly’s technical team to approve using our specialised review software. Final colour configuration was considered to achieve the best print result and prepare the files for flexographic print. A range of SRP’s were created together to ensure retailers would receive the product in an easy-to-use shelf ready format.

And we are delighted with the very positive response from retailers here and further afield. As result, the novel range is now attracting firm orders from home and abroad.”

Blink are a cat food brand who have successfully gained market traction since their launch in 2018. Their aim is to shake up the cat food category with products which are as close to natural as possible, recipes which contain premium fillets of meat (better quality than what you find in some human food!), and very little else. We’ve been helping the brand grow from strength to strength, initially a personalised online subscription Blink is now also widely available at major supermarkets, Pet Specialist stores & Amazon. The journey so far has been a massive success and we’re proud to play our part working with the amazing team at Blink!

One of the recent big additions is the new gravy range. As the brand was growing and showing signs of strong sales, Blink wanted to maintain momentum and increase their product offering by capturing a portion of the market who prefer gravy products. Blink worked with Goulding Media to explore how a gravy product could be added to the current range, in a way which compliments and easily identies as an alternative to jelly all whilst maintaining the Blink brand personality.

New playful illustrations were created for both adult and kitten packs, featuring the mischievous Blink cats. Colour palettes were developed to be deeper tones for this new range providing a distinction from the Jelly range, which also meant much of the creative content felt best reversed from black to white. Thought was also given to the shape of the pouch product window and after considering several options, a rectangular version was chosen for the final pouch design.

After the packaging design phase was complete, Goulding Media continued to help Blink develop everything they needed to sell the products into retailers to market the new range and a full suite of high-quality packaging visuals.

Food Connections are a passionate, experienced manufacturer of high quality baked snacks. Established in 1992 they have expanded a huge amount over the last three decades.

We started working with Food Connections in 2010, and since then we have together transformed their brand, packaging and marketing materials into the strong visual assets which help them stand out in today’s busy marketplace.

The brand mark is simple, effective and uses a minimal colour palette. The lettering is unique, with the letters F, C & S extending beyond the standard height to playfully interact with the other characters. The wheat sheaf was kept from the previous brand mark, as a link to tradition. The sunrise symbolises warmth and happiness, a new day, a positive start.

The stylish black packaging is timeless and competes well on shelf and online, it acts as a neutral backdrop to the contrasting product colour which is vibrant and flavour specific. Black is often associated with high ticket luxury items, but here it’s used successfully to deliver a message of affordable quality.

In the last decade of partnership with Food Connections, we estimate that 250+ pieces of packaging design have been developed! Including creative work for several high street brands which Food Connections supply. It’s been a thrilling journey and an honour to watch the company grow from strength to strength.
