One thing I've caught myself doing when looking for something on Google, is skipping the ads and going straight to organic results. Just shows the value of both SEO and PPC, as if the business only has paid ads running, chances are I'd subconsciously skip it.

I've just had to turn a prospective client down, which surprised them. They were a reasonably established business looking to grow their SEO. The challenge was, what they were looking to achieve for the budget they outlined wasn't achievable. So I told them as much, advised them they either needed to triple their budget or be prepared to wait 3x the length of time briefed. They were surprised with my reaction, as most other people they spoke to just sent them a proposal.

We could have easily accepted their work, but I think in this industry, credibility and transparency is everything. Now if the client decides to come back with the adjusted budget, hopefully we'll be first in line for the work. If they go with someone else I may just follow up in a year's time to see what the results were.

You can't always be 100% accurate with marketing, with some campaigns you make an educated case on how performance should go based on the data available. However things don't always go that way, but as long as you document why it didn't work and learn from it, then it's not all wasted effort.
