When you started your business WIX made sense for you. A fairly low cost solution, that you could get up on your own, pretty quickly. The design might not set the world alight, but it got you on line. However your business has soared and you need something with a bit more under the bonnet - also you’re fed up with trying to make it look good, when you just can’t quite seem to make the design work. The question is will it be any better on the other side?

The answer to that question really depends on what you’re trying to achieve. If you want:

- more control over your design elements: Yes

- more functionality (pretty much infinite actually): Yes

- really comprehensive blogging features: Yes

- more flexibility, freedom, and choice when it comes to an e-commerce store: Yes

- The ability to move between hosting platforms: Yes

If any of the above would benefit your business it’s probably time to think about making the switch. Do you have a site on WIX or Wordpress? What’s your experience?

User experience is just so important! I was reading an article on what makes good UX design and what it means to different people. I absolutely love this description by Reed Jones and for me the word 'delight', is really emotive. When I build a new website for a client I always want them to be delighted with the result and for it to exceed their expectations. Keeping this sort of thing in mind throughout the build process is really helpful. Little nuggets.

What does user experience mean to you?

I was chatting to a friend yesterday who’d asked me what I thought she should do with her website. She hasn’t been getting any enquiries from it but a couple of people had said it looked really pretty so she didn’t know whether to bother.

It does look attractive - because she has some nice images and her work is incredible - she’s so talented. BUT her messaging is almost non existent and certainly doesn’t target the market that she’s aiming at.

Likewise, although the images are nice they’re not always relevant and the design, layout, colours and information flow don’t really work for the customer type she’s targeting. Add that to the fact that her server is located in the states and her site is taking a long time to load, and it’s not surprising the enquiries aren’t flowing.

All these things are totally fixable, but it can be hard to make that decision to take action. How do you get to that point? What’s the trigger for you?

I can't remember where I read this quote but it was powerful enough to make me jot it down. I look at it every time I'm feeling indecisive - in fact I'm going to make it into a sign to hang in the office!

It's easy to find barriers to change - is it going to be any better on the other side? Is it really necessary? Is it going to be hugely disruptive? Will it work?

All questions clients ask themselves when trying to decide whether to take that leap and replace an underperforming or outdated site. It's much easier to do nothing, 𝐁𝐔𝐓 the potential rewards for the brave are substantial:

A website that gets you noticed for all the right reasons, a space where your clients want to hang out because it speaks to them on all the right levels, page loading times that make it easy for people to stay 𝐀𝐍𝐃 simply feeling uber proud of the outward face of your business.

All great reasons to get off the fence! ;)

What are you on the fence about?

There's always a lot of discussion about hero areas and what you should put in them. With this site we went uber simple, but when you scroll down each section has a super clear message with stunning images to support, building the story as you go. The whole site is spacious and aspirational, with minimal but to the point copy. When you land on this site you know exactly what the offer is and whether it’s for you.

It’s not rocket science - bad user experience can cost you customers, but the ROI if you get it right? Wowzer that figure - 9900%! Usertesting.com states that ‘UX (user experience) design is the process of designing (digital or physical) products that are useful, easy to use, and delightful to interact with.’ I love this description. In fact I think it’s another sign for the office - and certainly something that’s always at the front of my mind when I’m designing a new site, because this is key to the site being effective. For me the key components for an effective website are:

> clear
> consistent
> compelling
> relevant

And this needs to be applied throughout the:

> messaging/ content
> design
> navigation
> information flow
> user journey
>calls to action

I mean wow - and important when you remember that the world of web changes so quickly. Even looking at a site that was built in 2018 you can tell if it hasn’t been updated/ modernised over the passage of time. Although - this lack of trust is not surprising when you think about it. What goes through your mind when you land on a clearly dated website? I don’t know if these people are actually really professionals? I wonder if they’re still trading? Is this just a sideline business someone started 5 years ago and got bored with?

Probably all of these things and more! But, when people want something, the first thing they do is go online to see what is available. If this is their first impression of a company the chances of them getting in touch are probably pretty slim, even if it’s someone they’ve had a recommendation for.

The answer is obvious - do something about it - choosing how to do it, or who to do it with, less so. I have some golden rules that I use for any decision like this. I have to like the person/ company for a start. I need to know that they have my back even after the job is finished. I need to know that they have worked with customers like me before and I have to like some of the work they’ve already done.

When was your site last updated and can you tell?

Does your website truly reflect the quality of your brand and the work that you do?

Does it bring to life your trade/ products? Make them sparkle, so that when your absolute best client arrives on your site, you’re the only option they’re interested in?

Sometimes good just isn’t enough - if you do incredible work that’s visually stunningly it deserves to be celebrated by putting it centre stage on a fast, effective website, in a truly stunning design, that absolutely speaks to the people you want as clients.

Is your website living its best life?

Probably not surprising but boy is this costly in terms of business! Flip it and what you’re actually saying, is that if you have a poorly designed site, only 10% of your visitors will actually stay. That's huge! BUT how do you recognise if a design is hurting or helping your site? Sometimes you can just tell - does it look like it was built in 2010? Is it a horrible mess on mobile or do you have to pinch to be able to read it? Some of the questions are more subtle though: Is the navigation logical? Is it clear what the focus of the page is? Is there a clear visual hierarchy? Do the colours work? Does it load in an acceptable timeframe?

How many of these things does your site get right?
