I spoke on a panel this morning at Ideas Fest in the Tool Shed Tent alongside Matt Ewell, Claire Bartlett, Sarah Clay and Robin Waite - on the subject of selling.

Specifically selling in a way that feels honest, builds real trust and does not make you want to crawl out of your own skin 👀 (IYKYK!)

Which as it turns out is a topic a lot of people have feelings about…

Selling has never been about closing. It has always been about connection. Today was proof of that about a thousand times over.

I spent the rest of the day having exactly the kinds of conversations that prove the point…

More to come when I find the words. But for now..... what a day 💜

There are months where you haven’t even paid yourself properly (I see you!) 👀 It’s so common in founders…

So when did you last actually look at how you built your prices? Not just what you charge. But how you got to that number.

This is what I see all the time with founders…

You priced yourself by looking at competitors. But you have no idea what their margins are, what their costs are or what they are actually taking home.

You’ve not even built your own salary in? Well not a real one anyway. You are sometimes just taking what is left at the end of the month.

You are not always factoring in tax. Quiet months. Sick days. Software. Team costs. The hours that are not billable.

You are pricing on time rather than value. Which means the more experienced you get the more you are undercharging.

You are discounting to close deals. And then resenting the work part way through.

And then there are the legacy clients. The ones you love. The ones you have never put the price up for because they’ve been with you from the start.

Those clients are probably your least profitable. Your costs have gone up. Your expertise has gone up. Their price has not moved. Loyalty goes both ways.

Pricing is a foundation and if it was built on guesswork, comparison or fear it needs looking at.

This is a perfect example of what built better actually means in practice. Would you agree? 💜

Your team is still coming to you for everything. You’re constantly overwhelmed. And no matter what you do, the business still can’t seem to function properly without you in the thick of it.

Sound familiar?

Most founders skip straight from “I need to delegate more” to “why is nobody doing things properly” without ever doing the bit in the middle.

So here is the bit in the middle…

Before you hand anything over, you need to document exactly how you do it yourself. Not how it should be done in theory. How you actually do it. Every step. Every decision point. Every standard that currently only exists in your head.

That document is your first standard operating procedure. And it is the thing that means when someone does the task, they are doing it your way without needing to ask you.

Then you hand it over. But not completely. Not yet.

You do it with them first. You watch. You give feedback. You could always refine the document based on what comes up.

Then you let them do it while you are available. Then you let them do it while you check at the end. Then you let them do it and trust the process.

Most founders go from step one straight to the last step and then wonder why nothing is being done the way they want it doing

It is not a trust problem. It is a clarity problem.

Build the clarity first. The trust follows.

And that is how a business is built better. Wouldn’t you agree? 💜

Summer is absolutely all over the place for me right now…

Being pulled from pillar to post, diary is chaos and the focused organised version of me from June has completely disappeared 😂

BUT.

Our businesses are absolutely fine.

And I know that sounds like a flex but it genuinely isn’t. A few years ago a chaotic summer would have meant a chaotic business. At that time everything ran through me. If I wasn’t on form, nothing moved.

The difference now?

I actually built the foundations properly.

Systems. Processes. A business that doesn’t fall apart the minute I get pulled in six different directions at once.

That is what building better looks like from the inside - It’s structured enough that the wheels stay on even when life gets in the way.

Which it always does, right?

So if you’re heading into the second half of summer feeling a bit all over the place and quietly dreading September….. this is your sign.

My Momentum mastermind is open to join right now in August and you don’t pay a thing until the end of October.

Which means 6 weeks to get yourself properly set up, supported and thinking clearly before the autumn even starts.

Currently at £350 per month plus VAT when payments kick in but right now you can jump in, get started, and get that “momentum” up and running before summer comes to an end.

Drop me a message if you want to know more 💜

Sunday evening musings…

For the first few years of my business I was doing what most people do - Picking up bits of strategy here, learning something new there, trying to piece it all together into something that worked.

I’d spent years in corporate marketing agencies so I knew my stuff. I had the skills and qualifications. But being a founder and operator was a whole new ball game

Some of it worked. But underneath it there were gaps. Things that lived in my head and nowhere else. A business that worked because I was working hard rather than because it was built to work.

Eventually I realised the answer wasn’t more knowledge It was better foundations.

My mission, vision, values. Clear processes, having a business that could run without me personally holding all of it together.

That is what building better means to me.

If something in your business doesn’t feel quite right – it’s worth a conversation.

Hands up who could write down today, right now, how your business actually works? (Be honest) 👀😬

Not how you want it to work. How it actually works. How a new client gets onboarded. How your team knows what good looks like. What happens when something goes wrong.

Most founders can’t. They’ve been too busy for however many years running the business and doing aaall the things to stop and write any of it down.

That undocumented knowledge living inside your head is often what keeps founders stuck.

It’s something we see in our group mastermind time and time again - Isn’t it time to build things better?

I’m offering free 30 minute calls this month. Let us look at what is missing… Link below 👇

Five years ago a lot of people started businesses they never planned to start.

During 2020/2021 the world changed and they had to find a way to keep going.

And those businesses worked because the women running them were resourceful and determined and willing to figure it out.

But five years in, figuring it out as you go eventually stops working.

Because the things that were never quite put in place at the start - the processes, the foundations, the clarity around how the business actually works begin showing up as problems.

73% of businesses do not make it past year five 😱

So if you’re at the 5 year mark and you’re finding things a little bit tricky at the moment - This is what I’m helping women fix this year.

They’re not starting again. They’re not doing “more” They’re just building better.

I have some free 30 minute calls available this week if you want to talk about what that looks like for you. There’s no cost and no obligation. But maybe you’ll take away that golden nugget advice you need right now…

Something I've been talking about a lot this week..

Most of the founders I work with are not struggling because they are doing the wrong things. They are struggling because they are doing everything. And there is a difference.

When you are the one who knows where everything is, holds all the standards in your head, makes the final call on anything that actually matters - you become the single point of failure in your own business. Not because you are bad at running it. Because you are so good at it that nobody else has ever needed to be.

And the cost of that is not always obvious. It is not usually a dramatic moment. It is the holiday you cannot quite switch off on. The weekend that does not really feel like a weekend. The team that keeps asking questions they should already know the answer to. The pipeline that goes quiet the moment you get busy.

I've been building my coaching business for nearly ten years - and the shift that made the biggest difference was not a new strategy or a new offer or a new platform.

It was deciding that the way I had built things was not the only way they could work. That there was a version of this where the business had enough structure, enough clarity, enough momentum of its own that I was not required to personally hold every single part of it together.

That decision is available to you. Right now. With the business you already have.

What is the one thing in your business that could absolutely not happen without you this week? 💜

TEN YEARS in my coaching business next year 😲

And the thing I keep coming back to is something nobody really warned me about when I started - how easy it is to build something brilliant that you then become completely trapped inside...

You showed up, you delivered, you cared, you built a reputation and then one day you realise the whole thing runs on you being present and available and across everything.

I've been there. Most of the women I work with in our programmes are there right now. Nobody talks about it enough because from the outside it looks like success (and in a lot of ways it is!)

But there is a version of success that doesn't require you to be the DOER in every single part of it, one where you can take a weekend off and not spend it with one eye on your phone, where your team can handle things without you, where the business has enough structure and momentum of its own.

That is what I have been building towards. That is what I help other women build towards. And after 10 years I have A LOT to say about how you actually get there.... but I'll start with some of the simplest things we can sometimes overlook.

◼️ The first thing I did was write down every single task I did in a week and asking does this actually need to be me? Not could I do it better. Does it need to be me. Because most of the time the answer was no, I just had not created enough clarity around it for anyone else to take it on.

◼️ The second was getting really honest about my message. Not my brand or my positioning in the fancy sense. Just simply put - could someone else explain what I do and who for without me in the room? If the answer is no, your marketing will always depend on you personally showing up to create it. Which means the moment life gets busy, your visibility disappears.

◼️ The third was looking at where my best clients actually came from. Not where I was spending the most time or energy on marketing. Where the good ones actually came from. Because the answer was staring me in the face, and I was overcomplicating everything around it.
