Fun Fact Friday…
🌍 Both Greenland and Iceland are the only two countries known to have been named or rather, renamed for marketing purposes.
❄️ ❄️ Greenland is in fact much icier that Iceland and Iceland is in fact much greener than Greenland !
☘️ Many believe that Irish monks landed in Iceland long before the Vikings and name the island Iceland in order to deter other visitors and particularly the Vikings by creating the illusion of an inhospitable land through its name. Prior to that it is also thought by some historians that Iceland was in fact called Thule as possibly named by Pytheas the Greek in the fourth century.
⛵️ Some historians then believe that Greenland named itself Green in order to attract more inhabitants and also renamed one of their towns to be Thule in order to attract those actually looking for Iceland.
So, 🇮🇸 Iceland renamed itself in order to deter people and 🇬🇱 Greenland renamed itself to attract people, both marketing campaigns for different reasons.
🧭 Given the confusion over the name of Thule over the many centuries and its actual location documented only as being “Six days sail north of Britain” the Romans then referred to Ultima Thule as being “beyond civilization and beyond Roman reach”. And, over the many centuries Ultima Thule has taken on a new meaning of adventure and endurance based on “as far north as you can go” and a symbolic boundary between the known and the unknown.
👨💻 Here at Thule Media this matters as we renamed ourselves from Ultima Thule Technology ltd to Thule Media as we pivoted from being a software company building search engines to seek out the unknown to a digital marketing agency making use of such skills.
So… if you are thinking of a rebrand or a name change involving a domain name change then get in touch as there are considerable perils in switching and protecting traffic and existing business.
