If you receive Microsoft 365 sign-in codes by text message, Microsoft is retiring this feature on 28 January 2027. Microsoft will begin encouraging passkeys as the replacement from September 2026.
A passkey is a more secure way to sign in that can use your device PIN, fingerprint, face recognition or a password manager instead of passwords and text message codes.
What can you expect?
Microsoft may begin prompting you to set up a passkey from September 2026.
If you use Microsoft Authenticator, you'll likely see little change.
If you currently use SMS codes or phone calls for Microsoft 365 sign-ins, you will need to move to another authentication method before January 2027.
Using Keeper?
Keeper Password Manager already supports passkeys, making them easy to use across your computers, phones and tablets.

Don't Have a Password Manager?
While passkeys can be stored on your devices, a password manager makes them easier to manage across multiple devices and provides a secure place to store passwords, passkeys and other sensitive information.

Cyber criminals often take advantage of major technology changes to launch phishing attacks.
While Microsoft may begin prompting you to register a passkey, always be cautious of unexpected emails, links and sign-in requests. If you're unsure whether a request is genuine, seek advice before entering your credentials.

No immediate action is required.
