During the transition of moving into our new workshop, Chris and I wanted to make sure that we created a space that works for the way his brain naturally works.
His old space was cramped, tiny and originally designed for a very different use (life happened, as always!)
So our goal has always been to put everything in place that works around him rather than against him.
Other than physical layout, a big thing for Chris has been setting himself boundaries and finding the confidence to say no to behaviour that has affected his mental health over the past two years.
That is why we:
ARE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.
Walk ins is something that we never expected when we started this journey, and whilst we appreciate them, unfortunately it knocks Chris' workflow off track and he struggles to get back into it.
Creating a space where he knows when people are coming, allows him to plan his work schedule around you.
This means he can focus more time on the customer in front of him, because his brain is focused on what you are there for rather than what he was just doing.
It also means he can give his full focus to projects he is working on, whether that is designing, repairing a printer etc.
WE NO LONGER GIVE OUT OUR PHONE NUMBER.
This is a big one.
Chris has had customers calling late at night, at weekends and even when we've been on holiday.
Yes, we could get a business phone but at the moment, that's not something we are able to look at.
So we need to set a boundary that stops this from happening, because it's not cool to call when he is enjoying the very little personal time he gives himself.
Plus, having all conversations written down in emails allows Chris to go back and check that what he is doing is exactly what you as the customer are looking for. It removes the risk of error.
Paper trails are a crucial part of the way Chris works, and it works best for him.
Boundaries are something that feel so hard to set because we worry about annoying people. However, we need to set them to ensure our work remains the highest of quality.
Thank you for your understanding.
