WE’VE GOT NEWS! 🍂🌳

The Urban Tree Festival is popping up in autumn this year.

We normally celebrate trees in May, but this October we’re doing something a little different — making the most of Greenwich Park at one of the most beautiful times of year, when the leaves are turning and the park is full of colour.

On Saturday 24 October 2026, we’re creating a free one-day celebration at the Greenwich Park Learning Centre, funded by the Royal Borough of Greenwich as part of Black History 365.

The day is open to everyone — children, families, adults, tree lovers, tree beginners, creative people, curious people, and anyone who just fancies spending a relaxed autumn day in the park.

The programme has been shaped with particular attention to African and Caribbean stories, culture, food, migration and heritage, while creating a day that welcomes everybody to explore the many ways trees connect us to place, memory, wellbeing, creativity and community.

What’s happening?

10.00am – Rooted in Trees: Free Your Spine to Free Your Mind
A gentle, music-led movement session with Nicola Geismar, exploring movement, freedom and connection under the trees.

11.00am – Mulberries & Migration Walk
Join cultural historian and mulberry expert Peter Coles for a guided walk exploring Greenwich’s mulberry heritage, migration stories and the trees of the park.

12.00pm – Tree Gratitude Workshop & Tasting Session
Mama D of Community Centred Knowledge explores the hidden ways trees appear in our food, homes and everyday lives, with a hands-on tasting, smelling and sensory session.

1.00pm – Bring-to-Share Lunch
Bring a favourite dish or snack, share food and stories, and try flavours from different cultures.

2.00pm – Botanical Print Making
Join Sara Hayes / Urban Tree Festival to gather fallen leaves from the park and create your own botanical monoprints.

4.00pm – Drum Making & Sound Workshop
Participatory artist Margarita Novikova / be_heard_arts leads a lively recycled-material drum-making and sound session.

There’ll also be free tea and coffee, informal creative activities, space to sit, talk, make, wander and enjoy Greenwich Park in autumn.

Is it art in public space-or art as public space?
Public space is never neutral. It is claimed, contested and unevenly accessible. What happens when artists enter that space -not just to present work, but to negotiate how it might be shared?
In this WALC - Walking Arts and Local Community Café, guest artists Elisabetta Consonni and Cardellini Gonzalez-Igor Cardellini and Tomas Gonzalez-join the curatorial voices of Periferico and Collettivo Amigdala

Together, we will explore site-specific art, local communities and what it means to make work, and take a position, in public and urban space.

In what appears to be a significant change of direction, Colchester City Council has announced plans to explore returning Painters Yard to use as a bus station, with the proposals now open for public input.

In 2018 as part of Big Sunday I carried out public engagement around Painters Yard, gathering local views and ideas about the future of the site. With comment from Marc De ath & Chris Dobrowolski!

It’s interesting to see the site back under discussion, particularly given the conversations that took place then.

TIm Holding’s sculpture that has been removed from Culver Square Colchester. Tim was head of year when I was studying at Colchester Institute in 88/89 and Keith Albarn was head of school. Both Graham and Damon were studying there at the time. Tim was a great inspiration to me and I have fond memories of him, and remember the polystyrene moulds for this piece (the surrounding pillared pavilion) in the recycling bin at the arts school.
