Making something go viral is probably my favourite part of social media. It's almost like a thrilling waiting game once you publish a video, photo or article to see how people will react. Anyone who knows how I got started into social media will know that my journey began when a video of myself went seriously viral over the UK, it was a stunt I performed back in my Parkour days where I essentially back-flipped on top of a 40ft bridge with no safety nets or anything to save me if I fell. As you can imagine, not the most intelligent thing I've done but it completely changed my path when I saw the feedback it had gotten.

Since then I've been researching the 'formula' of how to make something go viral online. What's needed in the video? How do you need the viewer to feel? What psychology is behind getting someone to click 'Share'? I usually teach this in my Social Media Training sessions but I thought I'd share a thing or two about this topic in my blog today.

β­•. Emotions

Pulling on emotions are the best way to persuade someone to do something that you want them to do. Same goes with sharing content online. Compared to what people say, people unconsciously think of there social media timeline as an exact reflection of themselves and post content based on what others will think. If your content has anything that the consumer would judge as weird or strange, they usually won't share. However, if the consumers deems your content funny, motivating, thrilling etc, there's a pretty big chance they'll share and even tag there friends.

β­•. Playing the Psychology Game

Anyone marketer who says 'psychology isn't their thing', isn't a good marketer. The foundation of marketing is built on psychology and persuading people to buy your stuff. In the online space, making something go viral as everything to do with psychology. Understand that 99% of actions made on social media are completely emotional based and not logically based will give you a better advantage at making something go viral. Like I said in topic 'A.', targeting emotions is the best way to do it and using these to put the consumer in a specific frame of mind will make them share. So in other words make them laugh, get them excited, scare them a bit, give them a reason to want to tag or share with their friends.

β­•. 'Sharing' Frame of Mind

A share on social media all begins with the frame of mind that person is in when re-distributing your content. Usually this is triggered by your content being appealing to them and they see it maybe appealing to their friends which is why they would share. Research your target demographic and what interests the majority of them, spend some time finding a 'moving trend' that the target market enjoys being a part of and make content that revolves around this and relates with your audience. This is a brilliant way into getting something go viral within a demographic or group of people, they'll see your content, relate with it, find it cool that a brand is making content that they like, share it with a friend presuming they'll love it too and they 'Viral Spider' will spread...

As a business owner, I bet Β£5 you've have heard the phrase 'Social Media Marketing' before? But what exactly does that mean? Why will this Social Media 'thing', bring all this value to my business when I'm perfectly happy advertising in local papers, magazines etc... I'm here to tell you exactly that!

βœ–οΈ1 - Where are the majority eyes and ears?

Can we all agree, that the point in marketing and advertising is to get your businesses messages and products in front of as many people as possible? Great! Wellllll... Where are the majority of people spending their time every day? FACEBOOK! (100,000+ active North Wales users) That's over 100K+ eyes and ears available to consume your businesses messages and products. Done right, you'll never go back to print.

βœ–οΈ2 - Getting your message in front of the people that matter.

So, a lot of local magazines, radio broadcasts and even newspapers offer advertising for a fixed price and in return guarantee a certain number of 'impressions'. Okay, well, how many of them are going to bring you business? For example, if you're a Real Estate agent and you pay for this advertising. Your goal is to get as many people as possible, who are looking to buy a home, to see that ad so they will buy from you. But how many of those 'guaranteed impressions' matter? And WHY are you paying for the ones that don't? Social Media advertising allows you to target people by location, gender, age, language, hobbies, race, income, relationship status and on... Can you see the power of this?

βœ–οΈ3 - The power of 'word-of-mouth'.

Word of mouth has been around since the days of bartering, right? You get a great deal, hear of something amazing or something went viral that made you laugh. You automatically have this urge to tell everyone!! AND, it's usually on Social Media. Writing a status, posting a picture/video or hitting that SHARE button is our method of telling the world our 'word-of-mouth' recommendation. From a business perspective, it's much easier to get someone to share your content on social media then it is to get them to physically tell 400 of their friends in person. AND, studies have shown, that when someone see's their friend has shared a business on social media. It has the EXACT same effect as telling them about it, in person... Think about that for a minute...
