Hold off on that Amazon order till you read this 🫵

Be honest... was your first job a blessing or a curse?

Let’s take a trip down memory lane. Do you recall your first job and how you ended up getting it?

Did you email? Smarten up to hand out CVs? Support your family business?

No matter how, I’d bet that it was local. And no matter the grind, it meant some independent income in your pocket for the very first time.

Many reminisce of their first, local jobs. The inside jokes, the people, the experiences or the impact it had on personal growth.

No matter good or bad, working locally can be a huge leg up to your next profession. Or for many families, it’s a lifeline.

But did you ever think of how much you contributed to that local business owner’s dream? Or the elderly regular who desperately needed a chat that day?

This is the essence of supporting local businesses. Even if it’s every so often, every little helps.

Yes, it may cost you a little extra. But that extra cash is substituted for the cherished memories and vital experience that shaped you growing up.

Alongside reducing air miles and helping the future planet to breathe, just think... Isn’t this the same experience that should be passed onto the next generation?

My first job? The Tea Station in Deganwy. I still look back at the Welsh rarebit gifted in secret at lunch on a rainy work day. Cheers Gaynor x

Can you guess what journey we took to discover Rusty Outside's branding? Let me walk you through 🚶‍➡️

Russ Paul, a Prifysgol Bangor Alumni, has always been passionate about the natural world, as well as a climbing fanatic. A thought struck. He could turn his hobby into a career as a freelance Outdoor Activity Instructor based in North Wales.

His main pain point?
Visibility. He required a professional profile that could appeal to larger outdoor companies, who hire freelancers. He was unsure where to start with branding but loves the colour orange. 🟠

I took the wheel, went through the four phases of creating an unforgettable brand (discover, story, create & reveal) and produced three initial ideas.

After some refinement, one stood out. The compass concept was the one to form a cohesive brand around, depicting a sharp rocky formation, inspired by the ones found on Glyder Fawr, with those forms reflecting into lakes and canyons.

Now, he’s out there inspiring people to safely experience the outdoors 🌄

You can find Rusty Outside on Instagram (Russ is also a big fan of photography):

I’m curious... what outdoor activities are you eager to have a go at? I'm down for canyoning, personally 👇

I have an exciting announcement! 📢✒️

After some incredible years at iVendi, my chapter as Brand Designer has come to a close. Through the months to follow, I’ve refined my branding, web design and illustrative skills as a designer and continued to build a personal brand, named Gwerin Creative, to pursue a freelance career.

Gwerin Creative, meaning "folk" in Welsh, represents the complexities of people and the importance of a highly engaged community to form unforgettable brands.

And since it’s my personal brand, I wanted something… well, personal! My fiancé is Irish and I’m Welsh, and in searching for connections between the Celtic nations, we found plenty: both are rugby nations (the curse has been lifted 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿), both have their own native language, and both are accustomed to crap weather.

The list goes on, but I yearned for something more meaningful. That’s when Julieanne described Ogham to me: An ancient Irish writing system, often inscribed on ‘Ogham stones’, primarily used to mark territories, names, and sometimes trade routes.

But did you know that Ogham stones are found in Wales too? The majority of them in Pembrokeshire, often bilingual, featuring both Ogham and Latin.

So I applied this to my branding and created a linear pattern representing the following words translated into Ogham: community, imagination, and originality - values celebrated through Gwerin Creative.

Cool, right? Read more about Ogham and its connection between Ireland and Wales linked below.

I’m open to any freelance work regarding brand strategy, web design and other creative solutions such as illustration in both Ireland and the UK. Get in touch via [email protected] or drop me a dm if you fancy a chat!
