Onguma Nature Reserve on the eastern fringe of Etosha National Park, has launched "Onkolo Soundscapes", a brand new activity on the reserve - and the first experience of its kind in Namibia!

Using a network of sensitive microphones discreetly and strategically positioned around Onguma’s water-level Onkolo Hide, the system captures and amplifies the living soundscape of the surrounding bushveld far beyond what the human ear alone can detect. The result is an intimate, sensory-first encounter that changes the way guests experience the African bush entirely.

Imagine it...
🦋 The buzz of a dragonfly or butterfly in flight.
🦁 The lapping of lions quenching their thirsts.
🦅The tiny footsteps of a bird and distant cry of a fish eagle.
🐸 The plop of a frog jumping off its lily pad.

Fabulous few days at Tembe Elephant Park. Beautiful scenery, magnificent elephants and even a lion kill!

It meant a lot to wake up there this morning, on Mkhulu’s birthday, seeing how the Tembe community and his family continue his legacy. I know he would be so proud.

It’s nearly 30 years since I first sat at Mahlasela Hide and fell in love with this park and its Ellie’s. I feel very blessed to be a part of its history.

ONGUMA’S ONKOLO SOUNDSCAPES LAUNCHES in NAMIBIA

Onkolo Soundscapes is a sensory-first safari encounter hosted at Onkolo, Onguma’s water-level hide, overlooking a busy and well-frequented waterhole on the reserve.

Using a network of sensitive, carefully placed microphones, the system captures the living soundscape of the surrounding bushveld with remarkable clarity, drawing in sounds from hundreds of metres in every direction that would otherwise pass completely unnoticed. 🐝🦋🐦‍⬛🐘🦒

This is not a passive audio tour. It is an invitation to slow down, recalibrate your senses, and experience wildlife behaviour in a way that goes far beyond what the eye alone can register.
