If you’re thinking about building a website and saving some money, using AI probably feels like a no-brainer. And to be fair, it can work. But the real question is… will it actually save you money in the long run?
Here are a few things people don’t always think about.
Originality
AI tends to pull from what already exists, so a lot of the websites it creates end up looking pretty similar. Nothing wrong with that on the surface—but if you’re trying to stand out, it can be a bit of a problem.
Customisation
Getting the basics is easy. Getting everything just, right? Not so much. Tweaking layouts, matching exact brand colours, adjusting spacing… it can turn into a lot of trial and error.
SEO
This is a big one. AI-built websites often come with bloated or messy code, which can slow things down. And if your website’s slow, Google’s not going to love it. A properly built site is usually much cleaner behind the scenes.
Content
AI is great for getting words on a page quickly, but it doesn’t really sound like you. If you actually want to connect with people, your own tone and personality make a big difference.
Security
If things aren’t checked properly, you can end up with plugin issues or security gaps. It’s not always obvious at first, but it can cause serious problems later.
Maintenance
Everything might look fine when it goes live… but what happens when something breaks? Or needs updating? That’s where things can get tricky if you’re not sure what you’re doing.
Conclusion
AI can definitely save money upfront, no question. But once you start fixing issues, tweaking things, and keeping everything running smoothly, it can end up costing just as much—or more.
It’s brilliant for ideas, drafts, or smaller projects. But for a proper business website, it’s still more of a tool than a full replacement.
And yeah, I know that probably sounds like something I would say… but honestly, I’ve seen quite a few AI-built websites fall short once they’re out in the real world.
