Hot Cross Bun Judgement – Handmade by Lucy Humphrey

The panel at DigiBubble & Gatwick Diamond Business approached this round with the utmost professionalism… despite the introduction of our only handmade entrant into the competition.

Yes, these buns were lovingly crafted by Lucy Humphrey

And yes… she may be the wife of one of the judges.

But let the record show:
This was a completely fair, unbiased, highly serious judging process. (No favours. No extra butter allowances. No funny business.)

Now… onto the bun.

Appearance: Comfortingly homemade. Rustic, welcoming and exactly what you want to see from a handcrafted entry.

Aroma: Strong and inviting both pre and post toast, a standout performer that immediately got the judges’ attention.

Flavour: Bold, rich and full of character. This is where homemade really flexes.

Butterability: Exceptional. These buns absorbed and held butter like true professionals, allowing for a consistent and satisfying spread across every bite (a rare and celebrated achievement in bun judging circles).

However… even the strongest contenders are not without critique:

Fruit Distribution: Noted as inconsistent. Some bites were generously packed, others… less so. A minor disappointment given the otherwise outstanding performance.

Overall Verdict:
A strong contender with standout homemade charm
Elite-level butter performance
Just held back slightly by fruit consistency

Homemade has officially entered the arena… and raised a few eyebrows in the process.

The competition just got interesting.
