An animation project I'm currently working on about the conservation of biodiversity in the Eastern Arc Mountains. One of my favourite things about these sorts of science projects is researching the wildlife and environment, then illustrating it. I get to learn new things while drawing beautiful parts of nature.

I used Photoshop to illustrate and After Effects to animate. I'm using a Wacom Cintiq pen display

For some of my projects I digitally paint with brushes that replicate analogue media, so the artwork has a textured, hand-drawn look.

I use Photoshop and a Wacom Cintiq pen display to digitally paint then split the artwork up over different layers. I then import the layered files in After Effects to animate by moving layers and deforming the artwork with the puppet tool and the rigging plugin DUIK.

These animations were created for environmental scientists who hired me to communicate their research findings. I collaborated with them on the script, then designed the storyboards and produced the animation.

☀️🐝Solar parks aren't just for generating energy. They can also be valuable habitats for pollinators.

🎨I worked with environmental researcher Hollie Blaydes to turn her research into a 2-minute animated explainer, aimed at the solar industry, ecologists, farmers and policy makers.

💬The animation was used to support Hollie's outreach and conference presentations.

📰Hollie’s important research was also covered in a Guardian article: “Solar parks could be used to boost bumblebee numbers, study suggests - Lancaster University researchers say sowing wildflowers alongside panels would have benefits for farmers who rely on pollinators“

In this video I'm scrolling through the project case study on my website: https://mairperkins.co.uk/animations/envision-science-animation-solar-parks-for-pollinators/

The process involved collaborating on the script, designing a visual style, storyboarding, hiring a voiceover artist and animating in After Effects. Some of the 3D elements were built in Cinema 4D.

A clip from an a science animation I made about research into rivers. Drawn with Adobe illustrator then animated in After Effects. This was inspired by the Peak District National Park which is near where I live.

I made this little frog for a science explainer animation I'm currently working on about Chytridiomycosis which is a fungal disease threatening amphibians.

Some illustrated storyboards for an animation project I'm working on about the role of sea birds in coral reef ecosystems.
