As part of our "Can Sports Leadership and Management Techniques Transform Your Organisation?" blog we analyse The Ferguson Formula to see if his techniques used in sport management can help businesses maximise their employee's potential.
We look at his sixth technique Prepare to Win.
Winning games in the last few moments was something Ferguson’s team were famed for. His inspirational halftime team-talks and the right tactical changes during the game no doubt helped, but this was not the whole story. Ferguson ensured his team practiced how they should play if they needed a goal with ten, five, or three minutes remaining.
Similarly, the performance and success of an organisation is determined mainly by the skills; adaptability and abilities of the organisation’s workforce.
Investing in training for your employees ensures that there will be a constant supply of skills and competencies to benefit the organisation.
Training opportunities makes employees feel valued; however, they must be willing to learn new things, know why it is important to learn and have tangible benefits from the learning.
Employees need to practice what they have learned in a supportive environment.
The main types of training and development you can offer are:
• On-the-job training
• Mentorship
• Apprenticeship
• Vestibule training / Simulators
• Web-based learning
• Instructor-led classroom training
• Programmed self-instruction
• Case studies / Role playing
• Job rotations and transfers
However, a blurred line has been created as to who is responsible and accountable for professional development, as this was previously solely down to the employer.
Nevertheless, it would be advisable for organisations to continue to develop their workforce to ensure that they have the correct skills and knowledge whilst making your employees feel valued.
This eight-step principle is explored in our blog.
