Fail we may sail we must.

Recent letterpress printing, scanned and enlarged to A1.

In a 2010 interview with Dummy Magazine, Weatherall, who died on 17th February 2020, described his first encounter with the phrase, “Fail we may, sail we must”. While being driven to a gig in county Cork by a young fisherman, Weatherall asked him about his life and work. "He wanted to know about the glamourous world of DJing, to which I said, It’s bo****ks, it’s disco’s, tell me about tales of the sea,” Weatherall remarked at the time.

I have just completed this lovely wedding invitation. The brief was for a 'Medieval' scroll. With a slight adaptation, I went with a tri-fold design rather than a roll as posting would present a problem. The illustrations are sourced from old books and typographic catalogues, and the text on the front page was printed in a gold foil to add a bit drama to the invite. The material was Parch Marque, which unfortunately has been discontinued.

I do love working on an interesting brief, especially when it means that I have to go digging to find source material.

Fragments.

One of the studio jobs is to clean and sort new trays of type. It is common that the trays arrive in a rather shabby condition, full of dust and debris accumulated over the years. It is also good to treat them to a spray down with insecticide to rid the wood of woodworn, and dry/wet rot.

This little fragment of a label was found on the underside of the case. I wonder when was the last time that anyone had seen this.

Be Where Your Feet Are.

We had some terrific results in this weeks Typography Workshop at the Smallprint Company Studio.

I have been collecting old ordnance survey maps from charity shops to use as a background for some letterpress workshops. Really pleased with the result on this one.

I have added a new design to our collection of hand-printed greetings cards. This design features a classic mirror ball in a shiny rose gold foil printed on a heavy recycled black card stock.

This really made my day.

I hosted a birthday party for a group of young people, and they left this lovely thank you card for me to find.
