Read the types of logo design explained.

Here’s are the main logo design styles summed up and their value.


1. Wordmark or logotype


A full-word design solution, purely typographical and often stylised, or a redrawn font to make a unique identity



2. Symbol or Brandmark


Usually employed when a company is well established. Starbucks removed their name from their logo design and used the mermaid symbol only, twitter did the same type of thing. The name can appear alongside the symbol or brandmark but this is separate and not part of the logo. This approach is increasingly used due to social media use.

3. Lettermark or monogram


A shortened version of a company name e.g IBM = “International Business Machines”. Often very wordy logos have an ugly appearance and the shortening approach refines them. A long word logo is is difficult to read when produced at small sizes e.g on a social media icon.



4. Combined


Combined logos are the result of different logo design techniques added together. A logo design could be a brandmark plus a wordmark for instance.

5. Emblems


Emblematic designs are where typography is contained into a geometric shape/s.

Invaluable to differentiate your image from your competition. It creates recognition and reflects your personality.

2. Fonts & typestyles
Consistency is key. Using a suite of fonts for visual communication presents a professional and assured brand identity.

3. Graphic devices
A brand strategy should include brand devices. These are often shapes or marks that add weight to your image. They are separate from the brand logo.

4. Photo/image styles
The presentation of images impacts brand perception. Like with other elements, it is wise to use a consistent style of photograph or illustration, to represent your brand.

5. Messaging
Creating a messaging system creates a logical language and tone of voice. Deciding how you sound as a brand persistently is invaluable to your brand appearance.

6. Sub-brands/products
A brand is so much more than a company identity. Often a product identity is at the fore of your brand. Outlining products and their brand image should be a part of your blueprint. If you have sub-brands, these need to be designed decisively too.

7. Strapline
A 2-3 second elevator pitch. It is a line that sums up the brand, representing its culture, identity and personality.

8. Logo Suite
Having a range of logos allows you to choose the best format for different scenarios. You should have your logo in colour, white only, and in monotone black & white. Having these following formats allows you to use the logo in digital and print media Formats to include are, .png, .ai, .eps, .jpg, .svg.

9. Brand Identifier
A brand identifier, badge, or icon is more important than ever. Social media icons should be a thumbprint of your brand. Having a brand-identifying mark in your brand strategy is essential.
