Will AI ever be conscious? The Lizard says no!
Recently, I heard the supposition that AI is showing elements of “digital consciousness” through “continuity, preference and relational meaning”.
I address whether AI can or will ever be conscious in my book The Lizard in Your Mind’s Eye: a story about how the spirit world guides us, and essentially, the answer is no way.
Part of consciousness is sentience (having feelings, being able to perceive and experience pleasure and pain), also having a sense of morality and the ability to reason, among other things.
The definition is important because it provides the basis for why it matters: conscious, sentient beings are alive, have an elevated status, have rights. It’s what makes humans (and in my view, animals) special. So if computers are considered to be conscious, we need to consider their feelings too…
