With AI now playing a central role in search engines and search behaviour, it's becoming increasingly important to optimise website content for AI-driven search. One way to achieve this is through llms.txt files, which help AI systems better understand and access your website's content.

As this is still a relatively new development, many people may not yet be familiar with llms.txt files or how they work. To help explain the concept, we've published a detailed blog article covering what llms.txt files are, how they function, and the benefits they can provide.

Ahrefs analysed 137,000 domains and discovered that 97% of llms.txt files generated no requests, while AI retrieval bots represented just 1% of all recorded requests.

Using Ahrefs data, the study identified user agents accessing these files. Approximately 28% of the 137,000 domains surveyed have published an llms.txt file. However, because Ahrefs customers tend to be more technically advanced, adoption across the wider web is likely lower.

The MonsterInsights WordPress plugin website is currently offline, with users being advised not to download the plugin from third-party sources.

The MonsterInsights website has reportedly been targeted in a cyberattack, with claims that it was compromised and used to send phishing emails to customers. The free version of MonsterInsights is installed on more than two million websites, while the plugin is estimated to be active on over three million sites overall.

Given the popularity of this plugin, it is important to ensure installations are updated as appropriate. For further information and details, you can read more here: https://www.searchenginejournal.com/monsterinsights-website-compromised-and-sending-phishing-emails/579140/

WordPress has introduced the Protect The Shire initiative, a new effort designed to improve the security of all plugins and themes hosted within its repositories and directories.

As part of the announcement, WordPress outlined plans to strengthen plugin and theme security across its ecosystem. The initiative will also introduce a temporary 24-hour delay before plugin and theme updates are distributed through automatic updates, providing additional time for security checks and review.

To learn more about the Protect The Shire initiative and how it could enhance security across the WordPress platform, view the full article here: https://www.searchenginejournal.com/wordpress-announces-initiative-to-secure-all-plugins-and-themes/578189/

Reuters and Time have begun blocking AI bots by default, granting access only to approved crawlers through allowlists as more publishers take steps to limit AI-driven content scraping.

Both organisations implemented the change in May, joining People Inc. and The Atlantic, which introduced similar measures over the past year. Reuters reports that the move has not affected traffic levels while reducing the costs associated with serving bot requests. Executives also note that these restrictions are encouraging AI companies to engage in licensing discussions.

To learn more about why an increasing number of websites are choosing to block AI crawlers by default, read the full article here: https://www.searchenginejournal.com/more-news-sites-default-to-blocking-ai-crawlers/578527/

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has introduced a new conduct requirement for Google Search, enabling publishers to opt out of certain AI-powered search features while also requiring greater transparency around content attribution.

The measure follows the CMA’s decision to designate Google with Strategic Market Status in general search and forms part of the UK’s digital markets competition framework established under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act.

The documentation confirms a direct connection between the two platforms, providing businesses with enhanced visibility into local customer interactions. However, this feature may not yet be available across all Google Analytics accounts.
