I hope this might inspire others to volunteer- I know it is one of the best things I have done!
On Mondays, we’re sharing information about volunteering roles here at MRT by asking our volunteers to tell us their MRT story.
KAY
Kay has been involved in supporting MRT for many years. She was a volunteer with us for several years from 2005. But everyone involved with MRT will have seen her work as it was Kay who created our logo! She designs our literature too donating much of her time and skills for free, via her company, agrada
“Horses have been in my life from a young age, so I had first-hand experience of the emotional benefit you get from being around them. I had always thought I would like to volunteer at an RDA establishment and once the timing was right in my life, I contacted a few nearby places. Something about the way Muirfield responded appealed to me, and although it was not the closest to where I lived, I chose to go there.
My weekly drives out to the microclimate of East Lothian were a highlight in my week, not only arriving at the usually sunny West Fenton but seeing the friendly faces that greeted me.
It turned out that I learnt far more than I could ever have imagined. I had no previous experience of working with people with disabilities, but very quickly I got to see the person, not the disability. I learned about autism and other behavioural issues, and during my time there was taught exactly how the riding experience benefited those with physical disabilities – with measurable results.
I also made friends in East Lothian. Meeting people with a common goal and interest. I used my professional skills as well, by assisting with the production of literature and ultimately the rebrand. I have had a long career in design and marketing and Muirfield Riding Therapy is a far more professional organisation to work with than many large corporations I have dealt with!
I now support MRT remotely with design and it still gives me great pleasure to do so. I do however miss the actual contact with the riders, the laughs and fun with the other helpers, and even the lump in my throat when something particularly moving happens.
I am proud to be associated with such a great organisation.”
Thank you Kay 💚
