Be the change you want to see🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

I had the privilege of speaking at Hostelling Scotland's Annual General Meeting, where I shared my story, thoughts on access to the outdoors and the transformative power of representation.

Since 1932, Hostelling Scotland has been inspiring people, particularly young people, to experience Scotland through great-value, welcoming hostel accommodation, something I’ve been fortunate to benefit from throughout my own adventures across the country⛰️🥾.

Standing in that room, sharing my story of discovering Scotland’s outdoors and my passion for creating opportunities for others to experience it was a deeply special moment. But what touched me most was looking around the room and seeing people who genuinely care about making the outdoors more accessible, welcoming and life-changing for others.

It was an absolute joy meeting Margo Paterson, the CEO, Claire McCorquodale the Chair, the trustees and members. And to hear about the work they’re doing to help more people discover and connect with the great outdoors.

I left the AGM feeling genuinely hopeful about the future. There is still work to do, but I believe we’re moving in the right direction when it comes to making Scotland’s outdoors feel more accessible, welcoming and achievable for everyone especially young people💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👏🏻.

Last winter, 22 of us stepped onto the slopes for the very first time, and this year, we’re looking forward to showing even more of our members and the wider public that skiing is possible right here in our backyard.⛷️🏂❄️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

After an inspiring summer, many of us are feeling motivated to spend more time outdoors and perhaps take on new challenges, which is a great thing. However, let’s remember to put safety at the heart of every adventure. 🍁❄️

Before going out this Autumn /winter please be sure to have checked the below.🏔️

- Plan your route, check the mountain weather and
avalanche forecasts before you go.

- Take appropriate winter clothing, footwear and equipment
including torch, map and compass and plenty of food and
drink.

- Build up your confidence and practice navigation and winter
skills on simpler routes before taking on more complex and longer days.

- Consider signing up for a winter skills course with Mountaineering Scotland

- Be prepared to alter your plans or turn back if the weather
or conditions change.

- Let someone know where you are going, what time you will
be back and what to do if you do not return as expected.

- If you are lost or injured and can’t get off the hill call 999,
ask for Police then ask for Mountain Rescue.
