When families manage anxiety together, children learn they don’t have to face their worries alone.

Calm support, open conversations, healthy coping skills and consistent routines help children feel safe, confident and understood.

You can always start the conversation with Aneena and the Elephant to start that moment of connection at home…

When children resist school, it’s often not defiance but rather, driven by feelings of fear or anxiety.

Children learn best in an environment where they feel safe, not in fight, flight, or freeze mode

Aneena and the Elephant beautifully illustrates the journey of understanding emotions.

Sharing stories can create a safe space for discussion, helping children express their feelings and fears about school in a relatable way.

By focusing on connection rather than compliance, we can nurture our children’s trust and help them feel more secure.

Let’s make this journey together gentler, using the power of stories to guide us.

We can help children understand…

They are not their thoughts, thoughts don’t define who they are and they don’t need to be stuck with them.

They can shape the thinking and pictures leading to a change in how they feel.

…It’s a gateway for meaningful conversations about anxiety and coping strategies.

Here in Edinburgh we are return to school after the holidays. It’s common for our children (and parents) to feel a wave of anxiety. If your child is feeling nervous, you’re not alone!! Using Aneena and the Elephant is a powerful tool to use to help navigate these feelings together.

Here’s a few suggestions of how you can use it…

1. Start the Conversation:
Read and discuss Aneena’s journey. Ask them how they relate to her feelings and experiences.

2. Reflect Together:
Encourage your child to express their own anxieties. What worries do they have about school? Connecting Aneena’s story to their feelings can provide comfort.

3. Explore Coping Strategies:
Identify moments in the book where Aneena finds strength. Discuss how these strategies can be applied in real life, like breathing exercises, talking to someone.

4. Create a Safe Space:
Let your child know it’s okay to feel anxious. Having open discussions about their feelings fosters trust and reassurance.

It is not a mistake that in Aneena and the Elephant nobody tells Aneena that she is fine and that she has nothing to be scared of. It’s very deliberate!

Every instinct tells us to reassure an anxious or frightened child but, if we want our children to build real confidence, them we have to help them develop that voice within themselves, teach supportive strategies that help them build lasting skills.

As a meditation teacher, grounding is my favourite tool to share with children 💛

It’s simple, sensory, and easy to understand feeling your feet, noticing your breath, listening to the world around you.

It’s a quiet superpower for children to help them move through big emotions and find

If your child experiences anxiety, having a positive trigger brings them back to the present moment and can stop the spiral leading into panic.
