In July 2025, the Talyllyn Railway held its 5th, and (for now) final ‘Awdry Extravaganza’. This event brought together fans of The Rev. W. Awdry’s work from all around the world to celebrate both the Reverend’s connection to the railway, but also the 80th anniversary of the first book in the series being published.

In the run-up to the event, I proposed the idea of putting together a program for the 3 day event and provided some concept spreads using photos and information from the previous year’s events as well as some illustrations from other media to showcase the idea.

Unfortunately, due to copyright laws and time constraints, the program was not fully developed and was left as a concept. Not every project comes to fruition, but I really enjoyed working on these.

Please note; photos and illustrations on these spreads are not my own and purely used as placeholders to demonstrate the idea. All rights belong to their original owners

Hi, I’m Calum! I’m currently about to enter my 4th year of studying Graphic Design at Edinburgh Napier. I’ve worked on a wide range of projects, such as:

· Branding
· Advertising
· Editorial
· Experiential
· Packaging

Although my client portfolio is small, I have worked with Rosewell Community Bowling Club, Graham’s Family Dairy, and the Talyllyn Railway in Wales. I also have industry experience through a placement at D8 in Glasgow.

If you would like to enquire about working together or have any questions about the projects I have completed, please feel free to reach out via my page, or check out my website below:

*Please note that some projects are conceptual and are not real clients.

‘The Bark of Life’

One of the projects given to me during my second year was to create a ‘special edition’ of a board game with a meaning behind it, and ‘The Bark of Life’ is the result of that brief.

The gameplay experience itself is mostly the same as the original ‘Game of Life’ with a few changes being made, such as the implementation of a dice instead of a spinner, and the replacement of the ‘pegs’ for character cards.

The concept behind the game is to highlight how difficult life is for different people in society and how a lot of the problems affecting many families today are out of the control of the individual’s affected. This can be seen in the game through cards talking about the rising price of energy, the knock-on affects of train strikes, and the impacts of importing food from other countries.

The dog theme, and bright welcoming colours are intended to be a ‘red herring’ to the game making it appear as though it will be as fun and light hearted as the board game that you can buy today, but as you play and you started being effected by the ‘Action Cards’ it should hopefully make people start thinking about the reality of the world we live in and how fortunate and unfortunate people can be.

My work is on the move!

If you happen to be in Edinburgh anytime soon, why not pop into the new Graham’s Tram? I’ve recently worked with and to create a series of internal Tram adverts for Graham’s ‘Tram Takeover.’

It was surreal to walk onto a tram and be surrounded by work that I had produced, but it was a feeling I instantly fell in love with! I’ve left this project having learnt a lot about working in a different format, as well as improving my workflow and working with clients.

One of the concept projects from my time at D8, the Carlton George is a 4-star hotel situated in the heart of Glasgow. This concept completely reimagines the hotel’s image, making it more oriented towards encouraging exploration and pushing its guests out and into the city.

Taking inspiration from the hotel’s location in George Square, the branding is made to be modular and very rigid in terms of layout. This can be seen through the text framing as well as the isometric illustrations used throughout.

After a year in development, I’m happy to finally showcase my work for Rosewell Community Bowling Club! 🎉

Situated in the heart of a small Midlothian village, Rosewell Community Bowling Club is turning a new chapter in its 100+ year history, and wants a new brand identity to suit.

The brand identity is crafted to focus on the community and how the club is run by locals for the local people. As well as emphasising the community spirit and the ‘one of a kind’ nature of the club, the rich heritage of the village was also a key part of the design, with old maps of the village being important is adding depth to the design.

A concept project undertaken during my placement at in Glasgow. This brief aimed to refresh the identity of the BBC’s Reith Lectures that take place every year. These lectures are delivered by prominent figures in politics, the economy, and other subjects that impact the world around us.
This concept aims to encourage conversation between the speaker and the audience, while keeping its elegance and pride. This design system aims to keep all the existing qualities of the lectures while adding that modern spark to its identity.
