Calling all local businesses 💫

I’m currently working on a campaign to promote all of the amazing attractions/ businesses/ places accessible by bus throughout Moray and Speyside. Led by Stagecoach and Moray Council, the On Your Bus Stop Moray campaign will promote bus travel to partner businesses throughout the region via a multi-channel marketing campaign.

And the best bit? It’s FREE to become a partner! As long as your business is near a bus stop (a short walk is ok!) you can gain FREE publicity across print, radio, social and online! All you have to do is offer an incentive which can be anything from a small discount to a free sample, exclusive menu items - you name it. The more creative you can be the more traction it will gain online.

So I’ve been a bit MIA these last couple of weeks. I’ve needed to focus all my efforts on and my existing clients. It’s been pretty overwhelming if I’m honest, torn between what I want to do and what I need to do!

For the next month I’ll be focusing on supporting our existing businesses and clients. Once we’ve got Humble running like a well oiled machine then I’ll have more capacity for new clients and doing what I love - helping businesses market themselves more effectively.

So if I’m a little quiet on here you know why. Running your own business is bloody hard and can often be more about sacrifice than freedom in the early days. Can you relate? Drop a comment below 🙏

I love this quote - marketing shouldn’t feel like marketing. You have worked so hard to create an amazing product to solve a problem your audience has. Marketing is simply getting in front of that target audience and telling them about your great product.

They have a problem and you have the best solution - it really is that simple. And the more personable you can be the better, people want to know who made this incredible product that solves their problem.

Tell them why it’s so great, the work you’ve done to make it so and why other people love it.

I’m creating a bit of a marketing match.com concept and want to know of every local graphic designer, social media manager, content creator, web designer, photographer, videographer, branding specialist, SEO whizz, email marketing manager etc etc. The plan is to have a one stop shop of local suppliers so you can find someone who connects with your business and can support your activity.

I am fortunate enough to have spent my life surrounded by strong women. Anything is possible when you’ve had the kind of support I’ve had and I feel so damn lucky. I’m determined that my little girl will grow up believing the same, that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

Particular shout out to my Mum who has been to hell and back recently but still makes me proud every day 🤍

We’ve come along way since began in 1914 but there’s still a way to go so keep dreaming, believing and supporting each other 🙏

So I’m trying to work out how best I can help you, small business owner. At the moment I’m working on a few options -

1) A full marketing strategy planning your year’s activity in line with your goals. This is a chunky document and takes me about 3 days but is pretty much your go to guide for success.

2) Social strategy - like the above but concentrating on how to use your social channels and content to achieve your goals - this would take 1.5-2 days.

3) Digital review - this is for established businesses just looking for some guidance to improve. I would review all of your digital channels and give you changes to make across the board in line with your goals. This would take about half a day so cost effective for all.

4) Marketing start-up - this would be for new businesses to get your marketing right from the get go. Where to position yourself, what channels to focus on and how to ensure a successful launch. Again this would take me less time so budget friendly (I’m fully aware of how much it costs to start a business!)

This week was a big week. And I’m not even talking about the addition of our puppy 😂 I left the familiar, secure and fun job that I’ve had for 6 years at Gordon Castle to go out on my own and focus on helping small businesses through Greylag.

And I really liked my job so this was bloody terrifying! But it wasn’t enough for me anymore, I want to really help small start-ups like us who just need a bit of guidance and support.

So I’ve done it - that’s it 🙈

The team threw me the most amazing leaving do (my face today 🥴). I’ll definitely miss the team/ office environment the most. Having others to bounce off, have a blether with, moan to. What do you miss most about being employed?

I’m going to take some time over the next month to practice what I preach and actually get my own strategy in order 🙈 so I won’t be taking on any new clients until April. Drop me a DM if I can help you 😘

“My name is Milly, mummy to Florence and Hermione, and owner and creator of Florence and Fauna clothing. This little venture started back in October 2018 after taking 9 months maternity leave and realising I wasn’t ready to go back to work and in fact not even knowing what I would do. I have always been creative and loved making things for Florence when she was very little, I knew the basics of a sewing machine but taught myself how to properly sew after trialling a few garments for her. As a family we love the outdoors and since moving to Scotland that love has grown even more. I want the girls to love and appreciate their surroundings and to feel comfortable whilst doing so. All our fabrics are nature inspired and made from soft cotton jersey blend to ensure comfort and durability through those first few years. My little business is advertised through instagram and all sales go through my website.

Florence and Fauna was only 18 months old when lockdown hit and actually it was one of the best things that happened to my little shop, with people having more time and learning to appreciate the small things my sales boomed. People spent more time in the outdoors and their local surroundings and they wanted their little ones in sweet outfits to do so. Since then the small shop community has really suffered and instagram has made it very hard for us to be seen. Ive began to take the steps this year to get my products physically into local businesses and to be on more platforms. This little business is so rewarding and I love being able to work around being a full time Mummy.”

Doing what brings you joy, prioritising what you love and learning a new skill is what it’s ALL about. What’s the point in slogging away at a 9-5 you hate when you are capable of so much more 🙌

As requested, here are some ways you can market your small business for free (or low cost!).

Also, a note on good practice. Try to make sure your grammar and spelling are correct as much as you can. We’re all human and make mistakes but it can be the difference between looking professional and amateur if it’s a regular thing 🙈 you can use Grammarly to double check content 🙌
